Kyla McGehee, referred to as Kyla, recently opened a business named “Zinc or Swim”. This business distributes and sells a variety of diving equipment, tools, and services. After talking with a few divers in the local area, a need was expressed for a way to hold tools as the divers went down underwater to repair/replace/fix components on boats, yachts, and other water vehicles. Currently, the divers can only take 1-2 tools down at a time, in which case they hold them in their hands, between their legs, or other methods. If they try to take more than 1-2 tools, the extra tools tend to fall from their hands and the divers risk losing them in the water. Because these tools are expensive, the divers normally take 1-2 down with them at a time. This costs them time and money having to resurface to retrieve more tools. From these conversations, Kyla thought of the idea of using some type of magnets that could hold the unused tools while the divers are under water. After struggling with the design, Kyla approached Jeremy Wilkerson, referred to as Jeremy, with a proposition of designing the magnetic device. Jeremy spent approximately one week building the design, testing different materials and finally built a prototype. The prototype was given to Kyla and she enlisted one of the divers test it. It worked perfectly! After a few modifications to the prototype, Jeremy developed the attached drawing MMW-01-JK, titled Marine Mag-Wrap.
This invention is to assist divers in holding tools, via the magents, while the diver is repairing/replacing/fixing components on boats, yachts, and other under water vehicles.
The invention consists of a 100% sport nylon material encasing the magnets and padding, and secured via Velcro. Refer to the MMW-01-JK drawing for exact step by step directions of how the Marine Mag-Wrap is assembled.
The 100% sport nylon was chosen due to its durability to hold the magnets, and because it is already used in fresh and saltwater applications, i.e. bathing suits. The fluorescent yellow color was chosen so that the diver could easily locate the Marine Mag-Wrap. The high energy ceramic magnets were chosen due to the holding power of 7 magnets and their high corrosion resistance. Velcro was chosen due to corrosion issues and its use in similar applications such as swimming trunks and shoes. The padding was chosen for comfort purposes, so the magnets do not pinch the diver's skin. There are 9-Steps that are taken to make the Marine Mag-Wrap. These 9-steps are explained in detail on drawing, MMW-01-JK.
The Marine Mag-Wrap is designed to wrap around a person's arm or leg and secure via the Velcro. The Marine Mag-Wrap can hold up to 2-3 small tools weighing a total of 3-6 lbs. The 100% sport nylon, padding, magnets, and Velcro are designed for freshwater and saltwater applications. Currently there are two sizes available, one that will fit around the arm and a larger one for the leg. There are other industries that could benefit from this design, but have not yet been identified.
