Evaporative cooling, also known as evaporative misting, is a physical phenomenon in which evaporation of a liquid, typically into surrounding air, cools an object or a liquid in contact with it. Evaporative cooling is especially well suited for climates where the air is hot and humidity is low.
As the mist is absorbed into the air just prior to being drawn across the condenser coil, the temperature of the air can be lowered by as much as 20-30° F./11-16° C. in moderate climates and as much as 40° F./22° C. in hot dry climates. Using evaporative cooling effect makes increasing energy efficiency of air-cooled condensers especially in hot summer days.
The effectiveness of evaporative cooling is quite high, but it may cause some challenges for condenser coil. Some amount of water droplets can hit coil before evaporating and leave minerals there. After some period of time coil doesn't work with high efficiency, because of mineral build-up.
The Energy Mist Shield is proposed to protect coil as well as to prevent it from getting dirty by debris, leaves, dirt and so on.
The invention is related to and useful for air-cooled condensers. The evaporative misting process can be used if ambient air temperature needs to be reduced. This helps reduce the load on the refrigeration system and to increase energy efficiency.
The idea of using Energy Mist Shield can protect coil condensers during evaporative cooling process. The Shield covers condenser's coil and protects it from getting wet because minerals may cause damage to coils. Shield is also used for protecting coils from dirt and foreign debris. This extends the life of air-cooled condensers and maintains high performance.
The invention is an idea to use the Energy Mist Shield for protecting the condenser coil from getting moisture and mineral damage. This is a process in which water is passed through a pump where the pressure is raised. The pressurized water then travels through tubing and is distributed to small nozzles that create fine mist. When this mist is directed across an air-cooled condenser, it flash evaporates, lowering the temperature of condenser air. As a result, cooling capacity is increased and electrical demand is decreased.
Some of this 10-micron water droplets may not evaporate immediately but first may be carried onto the condenser coil and evaporate. This can cause calcification and deterioration of the coil. The minerals accumulate on the coil and in some significant period of time damage it. At the same time calcification in turn reduces the heat transfer efficiency of the system. This is why the Energy Mist Shield can be used for protecting condenser coils from mineral damage.
The Energy Mist Shield is made from a porous material that allows air to go through freely, but does not allow water droplets to pass. The surface of the condenser coil thereby remains dry and undamaged. The Energy Mist Shield is installed before the intake of air to the coils of the condenser unit. The covering of the Energy Mist Shield is specific for each condenser. It is very important to cover the coils and prevent them from getting wet.
The Energy Mist Shield prevents getting moisture onto the coils. The droplets can't go through the shield and the coils stay dry. At the same time the Energy Mist Shield works like a protective screen from any debris and dirt that may contaminate the coils.
