The present invention relates generally to playing cards. More specifically, the present invention is a deck of playing cards that includes cards corresponding to the seven most recognized colors of the rainbow. The deck of playing cards further comprises a set of white cards and black cards as well as a set of wild cards.
The traditional playing card deck comprises fifty-two cards with thirteen ranks corresponding to four suits. The card ranks are denoted via a letter or number while the suits are denoted via a symbol. Ranks and suits are denoted on the front surfaces of the playing cards. The back surfaces of the cards generally comprise a uniform design such that individual cards are indistinguishable from others. A large number of casino and other gambling card games typically involve dealing each player a subset of cards, called a hand. More casual types of games generally involve players utilizing the cards of the deck in order to accomplish one or more specific goals. Playing cards are also often utilized as a component of additional games such as board games. While the traditional fifty-two card deck is by far the most popular and widespread playing card deck, a wide variety of alternative playing card decks exists as well. Because the cards available in these decks deviate from the card design found in fifty-two card decks, the games that may be played vary greatly as well.
The present invention is a deck of playing cards comprising cards that correspond to the seven most recognized colors of the rainbow as well as a set of white cards, a set of black cards, and a set of wild cards. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the playing card deck comprises twelve red cards, twelve orange cards, twelve yellow cards, twelve green cards, twelve blue cards, twelve indigo cards, and twelve violet cards. The playing card deck further comprises nine white cards, nine black cards, and seven wild cards. The red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, white, and black playing cards comprise solid coloring and are denoted by number markings serving as rankings located on opposing corners of the front surfaces of the cards for symmetry. The wild cards comprise solid coloring as well with one red card, one orange card, one yellow card, one green card, one blue card, one indigo card, and one violet card. The wild cards further comprise a unique design located on the front surfaces of the cards. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the card colors may be designated as suits with red denoting the lowest suit and violet denoting the highest suit or vice versa.
The playing card deck of the present invention may be utilized for a wide variety of card games based on traditional card games. Additionally, the playing card deck may be utilized as a component of various other types of games or activities such as board games and educational activities. While the playing card deck may be utilized to play variants of traditional card games designed specifically for the unique playing card deck, it is possible to utilize the cards of the playing card deck as a traditional fifty-two card deck as well. This is accomplished by selecting four colors (forty-eight cards) from amongst red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The four corresponding wild cards are added to the forty-eight cards selected in order to form a fifty-two card deck comprising thirteen ranks (numbers one to thirteen) and four suits (four colors).

As such, the card value 5 for each of the plurality of first color cards 10, each of the plurality of second color cards 20, each of the plurality of third color cards 30, each of the plurality of fourth color cards 40, each of the plurality of fifth color cards 50, each of the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and each of the plurality of seventh color cards 70 ranges from one to twelve, as shown in FIG. 4-12.
The card value 5 for each of the plurality of first color cards 10, each of the plurality of second color cards 20, each of the plurality of third color cards 30, each of the plurality of fourth color cards 40, each of the plurality of fifth color cards 50, each of the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and each of the plurality of seventh color cards 70 does not repeat. For example, if the plurality of first color cards 10 is specifically twelve cards, then the card value 5 for each of the plurality of first color cards 10 would be either one, two , three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, or twelve. This would then be repeated for the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70.
In reference to FIG. 13, for each of the plurality of wild cards 100, the card value 5 is presented as a “W”, or other symbol. Each of the plurality of wild cards 100 can be played as the card value 5 of any of the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, or the plurality of seventh color cards 70. Alternatively, each of the plurality of wild cards 100 can be played as a different numbered card outside of the range of the card value 5 for each of the plurality of first color cards 10, each of the plurality of second color cards 20, each of the plurality of third color cards 30, each of the plurality of fourth color cards 40, each of the plurality of fifth color cards 50, each of the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and each of the plurality of seventh color cards 70, depending on the game to be played.
In reference to FIG. 11-12, the plurality of playing cards 1 of the eighth color 81 and the ninth color 91 are only numbered cards and do not contain any wilds. As such, the card value 5 for each of the plurality of eighth color cards 80 sequentially increases with each of the eighth plurality of cards 80, and the card value 5 for each of the plurality of ninth color cards 90 sequentially increases with each of the plurality of ninth color cards 90. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the plurality of eighth color cards 80 and the plurality of ninth color cards 90 is specifically nine cards. As such, the card value 5 for each of the plurality of eighth color cards 80 and each of the plurality of ninth color cards 90 ranges from one to nine, wherein the card value 5 for each of the plurality of eighth color cards 80 does not repeat and the card value 5 for each of the plurality of ninth color cards 90 does not repeat. For example, if the plurality of eighth color cards 80 is specifically nine cards, then the card value 5 for each of the plurality of eighth color cards 80 would be either one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine.
In reference to FIG. 1-2, the color designation 4 for each of the plurality of playing cards 1 is presented on the front surface 3. The color designation 4 can be displayed in multiple ways. The color designation 4 can substantially cover the front surface 3 as shown in FIG. 1, or a unique marking 8 embodying the color designation 4 can be positioned on the front surface 3 as shown in FIG. 2. More specifically, the front surface 3 is colored as either the first color 11, the second color 21, the third color 31, the fourth color 41, the fifth color 51, the sixth color 61, the seventh color 71, the eighth color 81, or the ninth color 91; or the unique marking 8 is presented on the front surface 3 in either the first color 11, the second color 21, the third color 31, the fourth color 41, the fifth color 51, the sixth color 61, the seventh color 71, the eighth color 81, or the ninth color 91.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the entirety of the front surface 3 is colored for the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70, while the unique marking 8 is utilized for the plurality of wild cards 100. The card value 5 is printed over top of the coloring of the front surface 3, over top of the unique marking 8, or alongside the unique marking 8. The unique marking 8 can be a logo, generic pattern, single shape, etc. It is also possible for additional designs, patterns, markings, etc. to be printed over the coloring of the front surface 3 or alongside the unique marking 8.
In reference to FIG. 1-2, similar to the color designation 4, the card value 5 for each of the plurality of cards is presented on the front surface 3. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the card value 5 is presented twice, as a first indicator 6 and a second indicator 7. The first indicator 6 and the second indicator 7 are positioned diagonally opposite from each other about the front surface 3, wherein the first indicator 6 and the second indicator 7 are positioned in diagonally opposite corners. Additionally, the first indicator 6 and the second indicator 7 are positioned such that the card value 5 is displayed both upside-down and right-side-up when holding each of the plurality of playing cards 1 vertically. For example, if the first indicator 6 is positioned right-side-up in the top left corner, then the second indicator 7 is positioned upside-down in the bottom right corner.
In reference to FIG. 3, the rear surface 2 and the front surface 3 are positioned opposite each other, wherein the rear surface 2 of each of the plurality of cards is identical. In this way, the color designation 4 and the card value 5 for each of the plurality of playing cards 1 is unknown when the plurality of playing cards 1 is positioned with the front surface 3 face-down or away from an individual. The rear surface 2 of each of the plurality of playing cards 1 may be cosmetically designed, and is not limited with respect to a specific design.
The card value 5 of each of the plurality of playing cards 1 allows a ranking system to be established amongst the plurality of playing cards 1 to be used for certain card games. For example, the card value 5 of one could be designated as the lowest rank, while a card value 5 of twelve is designated the highest rank. Additionally, the color designation 4 of each of the plurality of playing cards 1 can be used to denote suits. The specific order ranking system used with the plurality of playing cards 1 may differ depending on the particular game being played. The present invention is designed for use in variants of traditional card games, unique card games designed specifically for the plurality of playing cards 1, and as a component of board games and educational activities. The following is intended to present an example of games that are playable using the present invention, and is not intended to limit the use of the present invention.
A first game, “Rainbow squared”, is played using the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70 with the card value 5 from one to seven. The cards are shuffled and placed in a randomized 7×7 grid arrangement with the front surface 3 facing up. The object of the first game is to obtain a 7×7 grid arrangement in which each of the plurality of playing cards 1 is ordered sequentially according to the card value 5 (number ranking) as well as the color designation 4 (suit). The winning layout is organized such that each row of the 7×7 grid corresponds to either the first color 11, the second color 21, the third color 31, the fourth color 41, the fifth color 51, the sixth color 61, or the seventh color 71, while each column of the 7×7 grid corresponds to the card value 5 ordered from one to seven. During the course of play, a player may swap any two adjacent cards in the same row or same column. The cards must be swapped in a manner such that each card is moved closer to and no further away from its final resting position in the grid. If the player reaches a point where no valid swaps may be made, the player loses the game.
A second game, “Solitaire”, is played using the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70 with the card value 5 from one to twelve. The plurality of playing cards 1 is shuffled into a deck of cards and a row of seven columns is created from the deck of cards, wherein each successive column has one more card than the previous column. The top card of each column is then turned over to reveal the front surface 3. Any card that is one rank lower than a subsequent card according to the card value 5 may be moved on top of the subsequent card. Three cards can also be drawn from the deck of cards and turned over to reveal the front surface 3, wherein only the top card of the three is playable. When a card with the card value 5 of one appears on top, the card is placed in a second row, wherein cards with the color designation 4 being the same are stacked in sequential order according to the card value 5. Play is continued until no card is playable, indicating a loss, or until all cards in the deck have been moved to the second row, indicating a win.
A third game, “Rainbow Bingo” or “Cinco”, is for two or more players, wherein each player uses their own deck of cards. The third game is played using the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70 with the card value 5 from one to twelve for each of the players. Each player creates a 5×5 grid with the front surface 3 of each card facing up, wherein each column corresponds to either the first color 11, the second color 21, the third color 31, the fourth color 41, the fifth color 51, the sixth color 61, or the seventh color 71. All colors may be allowed or only a selected five out of seven colors. Another separate deck of cards is then used as a draw pile to call out different cards, wherein each of the players marks off each matching card within their 5×5 grid that matches the cards drawn from the draw pile. Play continues until a player matches five cards horizontally, vertically, or diagonally within their 5×5 grid.
A fourth game, “Rummy”, is playable by two or more players and additional decks may be required depending on the number of players. The object of the game is to accumulate the highest number of points following seven rounds of play. All players are able to earn points during the course of each round and a round ends when a player lays down his or her hand of seven cards that includes both a book and a run. Each player is awarded points for any combination of books and runs attained in his or her hand. A six point run is three or more cards of the same color wherein the card value 5 is sequential, or three or more cards of the same card value 5 wherein the color designation 4 is sequential. A three point run is three or more cards of the same color wherein the card value 5 is not sequential, or three or more cards of the same card value 5 wherein the color designation 4 is not sequential. A run is eight points and is four cards of the same color wherein the card value 5 is sequential, or four cards of the same card value 5 wherein the color designation 4 is sequential. An optional one point run is four cards of random colors wherein the card value 5 is sequential, or four cards where the card value 5 is random and the color designation 4 is sequential; however, players cannot win a round with a one point run.
At the start of the fourth game, the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70 are shuffled into a deck of cards and a seven card hand is dealt to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down in the middle of the playing area forming a central pile. The player to the left of the dealer position (player one) draws a card from the top of the pile and removes one card from his or her hand. The removed card is placed face up in the area adjacent to his or her side of the central pile forming a discard pile in front of player one. The next player (player two) may then draw a card from the central pile or pick up the card discarded by player one. Player two must then remove a card from his or her hand and place it face up in the area adjacent to his or her side of the central pile forming a discard pile in front of player two. As the round continues, each player places his or her discarded cards in a discard path formed in front of his or her position. Players may select a card to draw from the central pile or draw the top card from the discard pile of any other player. The round concludes when a player has achieved both a book and a run in his or her hand of seven cards. If the player has drawn an eighth card prior to winning the round, the eighth card must be discarded. All remaining players must determine if any points have been earned with the seven cards in their hands. The dealer position rotates as the rounds progress with a winner being declared based on the total number of points accumulated after seven rounds.
A sixth game, “Battle”, is played using the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70; and optionally the plurality of eighth color cards 80 and the plurality of ninth color cards 90. The game is playable with two to six players. The plurality of playing cards 1 is first shuffled and then dealt to the players, such that each player has the same number of cards. The cards for each player are gathered into a stack and placed with the front surface 3 face down. Each player then draws the top card from their individual stack and places the card with the front surface 3 up in a central playing area. The player with the card value 5 on his or her card wins the round. The winning player takes all cards from the round and places the cards into a separate pile forming a win pile. If players have played cards and the card value 5 matches, then the color designation 4 of each of the cards involved is assessed. Colors are ranked according to the colors of the rainbow with red cards ranking the highest and violet ranking the lowest. White cards outrank all other cards (win) and black cards are outranked by all cards (lose) if used. The winning player following the assessment of the color designation 4 of each card takes all cards played during the round and places them into his or her win pile. Play continues until all cards have been played and compared. The player who has accumulated the most cards wins the game.
A seventh game, “Sudoku”, is played using the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70 with the card value 5 ranging from one to nine, in addition to the plurality of eighth color cards 80 and the plurality of ninth color cards 90. The seventh game is herein described with reference to a competitive game between three players. A 9×9 grid is divided into three equivalent playing areas with one playing area assigned to each player. Each playing area comprises a row of three 3×3 squares and players are only allowed to play cards in their respective playing area. Each player selects three colors and is dealt cards with the card value 5 one through nine corresponding to those three colors. Player one begins the game by placing one of his or her cards on a square anywhere in his or her playing area. Player two must follow suit by placing one of his or her cards on a square anywhere in his or her area, without breaking any rules relating to card placement in Sudoku. Once a color has been placed in one of the nine 3×3 blocks, all cards placed in that block must also be of the same color. After player three has placed his or her first card, player two begins the second round. Accordingly, player 3 begins the third round while player 1 begins the fourth round with play continuing as such. The game continues as long as no Sudoku rules are broken. Players are permitted to reposition the cards in their own playing areas as needed and the game ends when no players may place any more cards. If all cards have been placed, the game ends in a tie. Otherwise, the player who has placed the most cards wins.
An eighth game, “Clocks”, is played using the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70 with the card value 5 ranging from one to twelve. The eighth game is intended for two to four players. For each round the plurality of cards is first shuffled and then a first row of six cards and a second row of six cards is dealt in front of each player with the front surface 3 of each card face down. The remaining cards are placed as a draw pile in between the players. A first player takes a card from the top of the draw pile and turns over the card in the first row or the second row corresponding to the card value 5 of the drawn card. The first player continues to draw cards until a card is drawn having the card value 5 of a position already turned over. Each player continues to take turns in this manner until one player has turned over all twelve cards. The winner of the round is then dealt one less face down card in the subsequent round. Rounds are played until a player is only dealt one card face down and draws a card with the card value 5 of one.
A ninth game, “Nines” is played using the plurality of first color cards 10, the plurality of second color cards 20, the plurality of third color cards 30, the plurality of fourth color cards 40, the plurality of fifth color cards 50, the plurality of sixth color cards 60, and the plurality of seventh color cards 70 with the card value 5 ranging from one to eight. The plurality of cards is shuffled and then placed with the front surface 3 down in a 8×7 grid. Players then take turns turning over two cards in an attempt to uncover two cards wherein the card value 5 of both cards totals nine. If a player finds two cards with the card value 5 totaling nine, then the player places the cards in a win pile and selects two more cards. If the player does not find two cards with the card value 5 totaling nine, then the cards are turned back over and the player's turn ends. Players take turns until all cards have been removed, and the player with the most cards is declared the winner. Alternative scoring gives an additional point for each pair of cards wherein the color designation 4 is the same, or this can be used in the event of a tie-breaker.
The rules of the previously described games playable with the present invention may vary based on a number of factors. For example, the rules may vary based on the number of players participating in a game. Rules may also vary based on the personal preferences of the players involved in a game as well.
It is possible to utilize the plurality of playing cards 1 to form a traditional fifty-two card deck.
