TECHNICAL FIELD

The present disclosure relates generally to a neck protector.

BACKGROUND

In some industries, such as, sports, military, and law enforcement, protective equipment is worn by users to protect their bodies from injury. This equipment includes protective gear for the users' neck. In some examples, this includes neck collars, bibs, and base layers.

BRIEF SUMMARY

According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, a device for protecting a neck of a user from injury includes a body, and a helmet connection configured to removably couple the body to a helmet. The body is configured to cover the neck of the user to protect the neck from injury. The body is further configured to offer additional support for helmet retention.

According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, a system for protecting a neck of a user from laceration includes a helmet, and a neck protector configured to couple to the helmet, the neck protector comprising a helmet connection configured to removably couple the neck protector to the helmet. The neck protector is configured to cover a portion of the neck surrounding the carotid artery to protect the carotid artery from injury. The neck protector is further configured to provide a robust and stable platform for connecting to the helmet.

According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, a method for protecting a neck of a user from injury includes providing a neck protector having a helmet connection comprising a first side helmet connection, and a second side helmet connection, coupling the first side helmet connection to a first side of a helmet, and coupling the second side helmet connection to a second side of the helmet. After coupling the first side helmet connection and the second side helmet connection, the neck protector covers the neck of the user to protect the neck from injury.

Various embodiments of the present disclosure are discussed in detail below. While specific embodiments are discussed, this is done for illustration purposes only. A person skilled in the relevant art will recognize that other components and configurations may be used without departing from the present disclosure.

As used herein, the terms “first” and “second,” and the like, may be used interchangeably to distinguish one component from another and are not intended to signify location or importance of the individual components.

In sports, such as hockey, for example, there is a risk of bodily injury. For example, the carotid and occipital arteries extend along the vertical length of the neck. The carotid arteries are vital for providing oxygenated blood to the brain. The occipital artery supplies blood to the back of the scalp and the muscles of the neck and back. A laceration or puncture to the neck, such as, for example, by an ice skate or hockey stick can therefore result in severing or damage to the carotid or occipital arteries. Such severing or damage can lead to catastrophic injuries to the player.

Accordingly, the present disclosure provides a neck protector, also referred to herein as a neck guard, to provide protection to the user's neck, which, in turn, protects the vital internal organs, such as, the carotid and occipital arteries. That is, the neck protector of the present disclosure provides coverage to the player's neck to protect against puncture or laceration (e.g., from an ice skate).

The neck protector of the present disclosure is constructed to provide coverage over a majority of the length of the neck (e.g., the vertical area or space from the shoulders to the head) and coverage over a majority of the circumference of the neck (e.g., the horizontal area or space encircling the neck). The neck protector of the present disclosure provides various helmet connections to couple or connect the neck protector to a helmet to provide protective coverage over the majority of the length and circumference. The helmet connection types described herein are exemplary and other connection types between the neck protector and helmet are contemplated. The neck protector of the present disclosure is formed of materials that are puncture resistant, laceration resistant, or both.

In addition to its protective coverage, the neck protector can also include a reinforced area at the top front portion. This area offers additional support for helmet retention that can be used as an alternative to or in addition to a helmet chin strap 16. The reinforced area may include an internal or external material, or a flange built onto the top of the neck guard. This enhancement helps secure the helmet more effectively while maintaining the protective qualities of the neck guard.

Sports and hockey are just one example, and neck protection is a focus of other industries as well, such as, but not limited to, the military and law enforcement, where personnel require neck protection from projectiles (e.g., bullets, shrapnel, etc.). Accordingly, the neck protector of the present disclosure protects a user's neck from laceration and puncture in a variety of situations.

FIGS. 1 to 19 illustrate various embodiments of a neck protector according to the present disclosure. Each embodiment, as shown in the figures or described in this specification, provides a protection portion that covers a majority of the length and circumference of a user's neck. As used herein, the term “protection portion” refers to the portion of the neck protector that covers the carotid and occipital arteries on a first side of the neck, extending around the front of the neck, and covering the carotid and occipital arteries on the second side of the neck. The “protective portion” provides continuous (e.g., uninterrupted) coverage and protection (1) near the shoulders to a lowermost portion of the helmet in the area of the carotid and occipital arteries (in the vertical/height direction) and (2) from near a nape of the neck on one side of the head to near a nape of the head on the other side of the neck in the area of the carotid and occipital arteries (in the circumferential direction). A midpoint of the protective portion may be positioned midway between the ends of the neck protector.

As used herein, the term “length,” when referring to the user's neck, refers to the distance or height of the user's neck from the shoulders in a vertical direction to the intersection with the user's head. Accordingly, as used herein, the term “majority,” when referring to the coverage of the protective portion on the height of the user's neck, includes at least about 51% coverage of the height of the user's neck. In some examples, at least about 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 95%, 99%, or 100% of the height of the user's neck. In the exemplary neck protectors of FIGS. 1 to 19, the protection portion covers the height of the user's neck from about the clavicle in the front of the neck and from about the nape in the back of the neck to a lowermost portion of the helmet. In some examples, the lowermost portion of the helmet is a side helmet strap (e.g., FIGS. 1 to 13). In some examples, the lowermost portion is different around the circumference of the helmet, such as, FIGS. 14 to 17, having a lowermost portion in the front of a chin strap and a lowermost portion on the sides of a side helmet strap. In such examples, the protective portion provides coverage to about the lowermost portion on respective sides of the neck protector. In some examples, such as FIGS. 20 and 21, the lowermost portion is a side helmet flap.

As used herein, the term “circumference,” when referring to the user's neck, refers to the distance around the outer surface of the user's neck in a generally circular manner. Accordingly, as used herein, the term “majority,” when referring to the coverage of the protective portion around the circumference of the user's neck, includes at least about 51% coverage of the circumference of the user's neck, including the area of the carotid and occipital arteries. In some examples, at least about 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 95%, 99%, or 100% of the circumference of the user's neck, including the area of the carotid and occipital arteries.

A common theme with each embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 19, is a helmet connection, which couples the neck protector to a helmet donned by the user. A variety of different connection types are described herein and it will be understood that other helmet connection types are contemplated without departing from the scope of the present disclosure, so long as such helmet connection types provide a coupling between the neck protector and the helmet in a manner that provides protection to the neck, and, in particular, to the carotid and/or occipital arteries. Accordingly, as used herein, “helmet connection” refers to any connection between the neck protector and the helmet, regardless of location (for example, connections to the ear loops, chin strap, or directly to the helmet) or connection type (for example, snaps, hook and loop connectors, magnets, etc.).

FIGS. 1 to 8 illustrate views of an exemplary neck protector 100 according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 1 illustrates a user 10 wearing the neck protector 100. The user 10 is wearing a helmet 12 having a helmet side strap 14. The helmet 12 shown in FIG. 1 is an example of an ice hockey helmet with ear loops illustrated as the helmet side strap 14. The neck protector 100 is secured to the helmet side strap 14 with a helmet connection 101, as described in more detail to follow. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the neck protector 100 provides coverage over the sides, front, and rear of the user's neck. Such circumferential coverage of the user's neck provides protection to the user's neck from injury, such as, but not limited to, protection from laceration or puncture. Furthermore, as illustrated in FIG. 1, the neck protector 100 provides coverage to a majority of a length of the neck along the sides of the neck (e.g., where the carotid and occipital arteries extend).

With reference to FIGS. 2 to 8, the neck protector 100 includes a neck protector body 102. In some examples, the neck protector body 102 is a singular, monolithic body. In some examples, the neck protector body 102 may have a first end 104 and a second end 106. In some examples, the neck protector body 102 is a continuous loop with no first end 104 and no second end 106, for example, taking a form similar to a balaclava. In examples where the neck protector body 102 is a continuous loop (e.g., having a continuous, substantially circular profile), the user 10 dons the neck protector 100 by pulling the neck protector 100 downward over their head, much as one would don a balaclava or turtleneck shirt. In examples where the neck protector 100 is not a continuous loop, but instead includes the first end 104 and the second end 106, the first end 104 and the second end 106 are provided with connections to couple together once donned by the user.

Regardless of whether continuous or not, the neck protector body 102 includes a first side 108, a middle portion 110, and a second side 112. Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, together, the first side 108 protects a first side of the user's neck and the second side 112 protects a second, opposing side, of the user's neck. Furthermore, the middle portion 110 protects the front of the user's neck or throat. Additionally, the first end 104 and the second end 106, when coupled (or the rear of the continuous loop version), may protect the rear of the user's neck. Thus, once donned by the user, such as in FIG. 1, the neck protector 100 provides coverage over a majority of the circumference of the neck of the user 10. In some examples, the connection at the rear or nape of the neck may be formed of a material that is different than the material of the remaining body (e.g., elastic), in these examples, the connection may provide less protection to laceration and puncture as compared to the remaining body, or, in some examples, may provide no protection to laceration and puncture. In such examples, the neck protector still provides a protective portion that covers a majority of the circumference of the neck, as discussed previously.

FIGS. 2-8 illustrate the shape of the neck protector 100. The neck protector may have substantially straight sides (e.g., first side 108, second side 112) and a curved middle portion 110. The curved middle portion 110 accommodates the user's face and chin in the front of the neck protector 100. As mentioned previously, and as best illustrated in FIG. 1, the neck protector 100, when donned by the user, provides protection over a majority of the user's neck.

In the example shown in FIGS. 2 to 8, the first side 108 extends between the first end 104 and the middle portion 110 and the second side 112 extends between the second end 106 and the middle portion 110. The first end 104 includes a first end connection 114 and the second end 106 includes a second end connection 116. FIGS. 7 and 8 show the first end connection 114 is on a first surface 115 of the neck protector body 102 and the second end connection 116 is on an opposing second surface 117. In the neck protector shown in FIGS. 2-8, the first surface 115 is the exterior of the neck protector when in use, and the second surface 117 is the interior of the neck protector when in use. This allows, when donned by the user, the first end connection 114 and the second end connection 116 to be coupled or connected together to provide a generally circular shape to the neck protector 100. In some examples, the first end connection 114 and the second end connection 116 are a hook and loop connection (e.g., the first end connection 114 is one of a hook layer or a loop layer and the second end connection 116 is the other of the hook layer or the loop layer). In some examples, the connection type may be permanently connected (e.g., an elastic closure provided between the first end and the second end may be permanently connected) and in some examples, the connection type is removably connected (e.g., the hook and loop connection, snaps, magnets, etc.).

Connecting the neck protector 100 to the helmet 12 provides stabilization for the neck protector, which reduces sagging or receding of the neck protector toward the shoulders, which may expose the major arteries to injury. Such stabilization maintains the protective portion of the neck protector over a majority of the neck at all times during use of the neck protector. In addition, connecting the neck protector 100 to the helmet 12 may support the neck protector in a position that avoids the bottom of the neck protector from resting on the user's shoulders, improving overall comfort and encouraging use. To this end, the neck protector may include one or more helmet connections 101.

FIGS. 2 to 8 illustrate an embodiment with two helmet connections, however, more or fewer helmet connections may be provided. FIGS. 2 to 8 illustrate an embodiment with two helmet connections, one on each side of the helmet 12, however, other locations are contemplated, such as, but not limited to, the front (e.g., the middle portion 110) of the neck protector 100, the rear of the neck protector 100 or any location therebetween.

The helmet connection(s) 101 of FIGS. 2 to 8 includes a first side helmet connection 120 and a second side helmet connection 122. The first side helmet connection 120 extends from the first side 108 of the neck protector body 102 and the second side helmet connection 122 extends from the second side 112 of the neck protector body 102. The first side helmet connection 120 couples or connects the first side 108 of the neck protector 100 to a first side of the helmet 12 (FIG. 1). The second side helmet connection 122 couples or connects the second side 112 of the neck protector 100 to a second, opposing side, of the helmet 12 (FIG. 1). By coupling the neck protector 100 to the helmet 12, the neck protector 100 provides protection of a majority of the user's neck. This is due to the fact that the helmet connection(s) 101 maintains the neck protector 100 in a vertical position between the user's shoulders and head to provide a cover for the neck. The cover, as discussed previously, protects the major arteries in the neck.

FIGS. 2 to 8 illustrate an exemplary connection type for the helmet connection 101. Each of the first side helmet connection 120 and the second side helmet connection 122 include a flap 124 extending from the respective first side 108 and second side 112. The flap 124 includes a first connection 126 and the neck protector body 102 includes a second connection 128. In use, the flap 124 extends over the helmet side strap 14, as illustrated in FIG. 1. After the flap 124 is extended over the helmet side strap 14, the first connection 126 is secured to the second connection 128 to secure the neck protector 100 to itself, thus, coupling the neck protector 100 to the helmet 12 (FIG. 1). This process is repeated on the opposing side of the neck protector 100 such that both the first side 108 and the second side 112 are secured to opposing sides of the helmet 12. Although FIGS. 2-8 illustrate a configuration in which the flap 124 is positioned between the helmet side strap 14 and the user and the connectors join on the exterior portion, the flap 124 could also be positioned external to the helmet side strap and the connectors joined between the neck protector and the user.

In the example, of FIGS. 1 to 8, the first connection 126 and the second connection 128 are a snap connection, however, other connections are contemplated, such as, but not limited to, a hook and loop connection, as described with respect to FIGS. 9 to 13 a pass through hole connection, as described with respect to FIGS. 14 to 17, a magnet, etc. Additionally, the location of the components of the helmet connection 101 may be changed without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. For example, the flap 124 may extend from the helmet side strap 14 (instead of from the neck protector 100) for coupling to the neck protector body 102 in any of the manners described herein.

FIGS. 9 to 13 illustrate views of an exemplary neck protector 200 according to the second embodiment of the present disclosure. The neck protector 200 is substantially similar to the neck protector 100, except for the manner of the helmet connection 201, as described to follow. Accordingly, the same reference numerals will be used for components of the neck protector 200 that are the same as or similar to the components of the neck protector 100 discussed above. Similarly, some part numbers are omitted, however, like illustrated parts are understood to be the same as or similar to the parts illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 8 with respect to the neck protector 100. The description of these components above also applies to this embodiment, and a detailed description of these components is omitted here. The alternatives, modifications, and additional examples described above with respect to the neck protector 100 apply equally to the neck protector 200 and are, thus, not repeated herein for clarity of the description.

FIGS. 9 to 13 illustrate an exemplary connection type for the helmet connection 201. The helmet connection 201 includes a first side helmet connection 220 and a second side helmet connection 222. Each of the first side helmet connection 220 and the second side helmet connection 222 include a flap 224 extending from the respective first side 108 and second side 112. The flap 224 includes a first connection 226 and the neck protector body 102 includes a second connection 228. In use, the flap 224 extends over the helmet side strap 14, as illustrated in FIG. 1. After the flap 224 is extended over the helmet side strap 14, the first connection 226 is secured to the second connection 228 to secure the neck protector 200 to the helmet 12. This process is repeated on the opposing side of the neck protector 200 such that the first side 108 and the second side 112 are secured to opposing sides of the helmet 12. In the example, of FIGS. 9 to 13, the first connection 226 and the second connection 228 are a hook and loop connection. That is, for example, the first connection 226 may be one of a hook layer or a loop layer and the second connection 228 may be the other of the hook layer or the loop layer. The alternative helmet connections described with respect to helmet connection 101 apply to helmet connection 201 as well.

Other methods of making the connection of the that protector to the helmet are also contemplated. For example, a helmet connecting strap can be provided which connects to the helmet side strap. In such an embodiment, the helmet connecting strap can be a circular loop to accept the helmet side strap and include a first coupling mechanism for attaching to the neck protector. The first coupling mechanism can be, for example, a first portion of a snap connector or one part of a hook and loop connector (i.e., one of a hook layer or a loop layer). In such an embodiment, the neck protector has a flap with a second connecting mechanism complementary to the first connecting mechanism, for example a second portion of a snap connector or the other of the hook layer or the loop layer of the hook and loop connector for attaching to the first coupling mechanism of the helmet connecting strap. In another embodiment, the helmet can have an attached button, e.g., a first portion of a snap connector, and the neck protector can have a complementary connector for attachment to the button of the helmet.

The helmet connection 201 optionally includes a chin strap connection 230. The chin strap connection 230, when included, is coupled to a chin strap 16 of the helmet 12 (see FIG. 14). The chin strap connection 230 may be, but is not limited to, a hook and loop connector, a snap, a string or tie, magnets, buckle, etc. The chin strap on the helmet 12 may include a mating connection type for the chin strap connection 230 (e.g., the mating connection on the chin strap may be, for example, one of a hook layer or a loop layer and the chin strap connection 230 may be the other of the hook layer or the loop layer). Other mating connections are also contemplated (e.g., the mating connection on the chin strap 16 may be a first portion of a snap connector and the chin strap connection 230 may be a second portion of the snap connector). An embodiment of the present disclosure, for example the embodiment shown in FIGS. 2-8, may include a similar chin strap connection 230. Alternatively, the chin strap connection 230 may be replaced by use of a reinforced area, as described further below with respect to FIGS. 18-19. Further, the chin strap connection 230 may be used in combination with the reinforced area.

The neck protector 200 includes an optional additional second end connection 232. The additional second end connection 232 may be aligned with and spaced from the second end connection 116. The additional second end connection 232 may be included to provide adjustability of the neck protector 200. For example, if the user has a large neck, the user may connect the first end connection 114 to the second end connection 116. If the user has a smaller neck (as compared to the large neck user), the user may need to tighten the neck protector 200 and, thus, may connect the first end connection 114 to the additional second end connection 232 to provide a smaller inner diameter of the neck protector (as compared to the inner diameter of the neck protector when connected at the second end connection 116). In some examples, the second end connection 116 and the additional second end connection 232 may be a single, unitary piece or single component (e.g., a single elongated connection) to provide the aforementioned adjustability. Although illustrated with the second end connection 116, the adjustability (e.g., the additional end connection 232, whether separate or unitary) may be provided on the first end connection 116. FIGS. 14 to 17 illustrate views of an exemplary neck protector 300 according to the third embodiment of the present disclosure. The neck protector 300 is substantially similar to the neck protector 100, except for the manner of the helmet connection 301. Accordingly, the same reference numerals will be used for components of the neck protector 300 that are the same as or similar to the components of the neck protector 100 discussed above. Similarly, some part numbers are omitted, however, like illustrated parts are understood to be the same as or similar to the parts illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 8 with respect to the neck protector 100. The description of these components above also applies to this embodiment, and a detailed description of these components is omitted here.

FIGS. 14 to 17 illustrate an exemplary helmet connection 301 for the neck protector 300. The helmet connection 301 includes a first side helmet connection 320 and a second side helmet connection 322. Each of the first side helmet connection 320 and the second side helmet connection 322 comprise a flap 324 with an opening 326 extending therethrough. In use, the helmet side strap 14 may be fed through the opening 326 of each flap 324. FIG. 14 illustrates an embodiment having the opening 326 formed by a folding of the flap 324. FIG. 16 illustrates an embodiment wherein the opening 326 is present as a hole or slit in the flap 324. In the examples of FIGS. 1 to 13, the helmet side strap 14 does not need to be disconnected from the helmet to install the neck protector 100, 200. In the examples of FIGS. 14 to 17, the helmet side strap 14 is disconnected from the helmet 12 prior to feeding through the opening 326. After being fed through the opening 326, the helmet side strap 14 is secured to the helmet 12. This process is repeated on the opposing side of the neck protector 300 such that the first side 108 and the second side 112 are secured to opposing sides of the helmet 12.

The helmet connection 301 includes an optional chin strap connection 330. The chin strap connection 330, when included, is coupled to a chin strap 16 of the helmet 12. The chin strap connection 330 may be, but is not limited to, a hook and loop connector, a snap, a string or tie, magnets, buckle, etc. For example, the chin strap 16 on the helmet 12 may include a mating connection type for the chin strap connection 330 (e.g., the mating connection on the chin strap 16 may be one of a hook layer or a loop layer and the chin strap connection 330 may be the other of the hook layer or the loop layer). Other mating connections are also contemplated (e.g., the mating connection on the chin strap 16 may be a first portion of a snap connector and the chin strap connection 330 may be a second portion of the snap connector).

FIG. 18-19 show an additional feature that may be incorporated into any embodiment of the present disclosure to provide additional support for the neck protector and helmet stabilization. FIG. 18 is a plan view of the neck protector 100 and includes a reinforced area 130 along the top edge 140 of the middle portion 110. The reinforced area 130 extends between the flap 124 on the first side 108 and the flap 124 on the second side 112 to provide continuous reinforced coverage around the jaw line of the user. The reinforced area can be further extended beyond the connection 126. Although illustrated with snap connections (126, 128) shown in FIGS. 2-8, additional connections are possible, for example, the hook and loop connectors (226, 228) shown in FIGS. 9-14, a flap with an opening (326) shown in FIG. 16, or any other suitable type of connection. The reinforced area 130 of neck protector 100 may function similar to a helmet chin strap 16, removing the need for a separate chin strap.

FIG. 19A and 19B are cross-sectional views taken along the line 19-19 of the neck protector 100 of FIG. 18, illustrating embodiments of the reinforced area 130. The neck protector 100 may include a reinforcing material 132 that may be disposed either inside an outer cover 136, as illustrated in FIG. 19A, or outside the outer cover 136, as illustrated in FIG. 19B. The neck protector 100 can also include an inner layer 134 of flexible material in its construction. The reinforcing material 132 extends between the flap 124 on the first side 108 and the flap 124 on the second side 112 such that the portion 132 provides continuous reinforced coverage around the jaw line of the user. The reinforcement material 132 provides rigid support of the chin area of the user afforded by the flexible pad material of the inner layer 134 in other portions of the neck protector.

Advantageously, the reinforced area 130 can offer additional support for helmet retention in several ways. First, the reinforced area 130, which may include additional reinforcement material 132 or a flange, provides a more robust and stable platform for connecting the neck protector 100 to the helmet 12. A more secure connection can help prevent the helmet 12 from shifting or moving during intense physical activity, reducing the risk of helmet displacement during collisions or sudden movements. The flange or reinforced area 130 can increase the surface area for the helmet connections 101, ensuring a tighter, more stable attachment to the helmet 12.

Second, the reinforced area 130 provides a more integrated fit around the neck and jawline. This extended area helps the neck protector 100 anchor the helmet 12 more securely in place. A better fit around the top of the neck can improve the overall stability of the helmet 12, making it less likely to shift or be displaced during high-impact situations. The enhanced retention of the helmet 12 can also contribute to preventing neck injuries by ensuring that the helmet 12 stays in the correct position during play.

Third, the reinforced area 130 can help distribute the forces experienced during collisions or sudden impacts more evenly across the neck and the helmet 12. Instead of the helmet 12 bearing the full brunt of the impact in one spot, the extended and reinforced area 1321 can help absorb and spread those forces across a larger area, reducing the likelihood of the helmet 2 becoming dislodged. This can increase overall safety by maintaining the helmet's position and improving its protective effect during the event of a high-energy impact.

Fourth, in certain scenarios, especially during sports that involve rapid movements or impacts (such as hockey), the helmet 12 can be at risk of lifting off the head if it is not securely retained. The reinforced area 130 of the neck protector 100, by anchoring the helmet 12 more effectively, helps to prevent this “lifting” action, ensuring that the helmet 12 and neck protector 100 stay firmly in place to protect the head and neck.

FIG. 20 illustrates an exemplary neck protector 400 according to the fourth embodiment of the present disclosure. The neck protector 400 is substantially similar to the neck protector 100, except for the manner of the helmet connection 401, as described to follow. Accordingly, the same reference numerals will be used for components of the neck protector 400 that are the same as or similar to the components of the neck protector 100 discussed above. Similarly, some part numbers are omitted, however, like illustrated parts are understood to be the same as or similar to the parts illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 8 with respect to the neck protector 100. The description of these components above also applies to this embodiment, and a detailed description of these components is omitted here.

The helmet 12 of FIGS. 1 to 17 include helmet side straps 14. In some examples, the helmet 12 may alternatively include a side flap having a helmet connection 18, such as, but not limited to, a snap connection. This example is illustrated in FIG. 20. In such an example, the helmet connection 401 may include a mating second side helmet connection 422 (first side helmet connection not visible) to couple or connect to the helmet connection 18. For example, the connections may be, but is not limited to, a snap connection, a hook and loop connection, a buckle connection, etc.

FIG. 21 illustrates an exemplary neck protector 500 according to the fifth embodiment of the present disclosure. The neck protector 500 is substantially similar to the neck protector 100, except for the manner of the helmet connection 501, as described to follow. Accordingly, the same reference numerals will be used for components of the neck protector 500 that are the same as or similar to the components of the neck protector 100 discussed above. Similarly, some part numbers are omitted, however, like illustrated parts are understood to be the same as or similar to the parts illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 8 with respect to the neck protector 100. The description of these components above also applies to this embodiment, and a detailed description of these components is omitted here.

The helmet of FIG. 21 includes both a helmet side strap 14 and a helmet connection 501. In this configuration, the helmet connection 501 includes a first strap connector 503 formed as a loop to connect to helmet side strap 14 and a mating first side helmet connection 520 (strap connector and second side helmet connection on opposite side not visible) on the neck protector 500. In use, the first strap connector 503 couples or connects to the side helmet connection 520 by, for example, a snap connection 505 as illustrated, a hook and loop connection, a buckle connection, or other connector.

FIG. 22 illustrates a neck protector 600 on a user according to various embodiments of the present disclosure. The neck protector 600 may be any of the neck protectors 100, 200, 300, 400, or 500, or any variation thereof, described in this application. FIG. 22 illustrates the neck protector 600 covering a majority of the length and circumference of the user's neck. In particular, FIG. 22 illustrates how the neck protector 600 covers nearly all of the neck in the region of the major arteries 50 in the neck (e.g., the carotid and occipital arteries 52). This coverage provides the protection described herein. That is, the coverage of the major arteries 50 with the neck protector 600 prevents and inhibits laceration or puncture to the neck at the major arteries 50.

In the embodiments of FIGS. 1 to 21, the helmet connection 101, the first end connection 114, the second end connection 116, the first side helmet connection 120, the second side helmet connection 1 130, the helmet connection 201, the additional second end connection 232, the optional chin strap connection 230, the first side helmet connection 220, the second side helmet connection 230, the helmet connection 301, the first side helmet connection 320, the second side helmet connection 322, the optional chin strap connection 330, the helmet connection 401, the first side helmet connection of FIG. 20 (not visible), the second side helmet connection 422, the helmet connection 501, the first side helmet connection 520, the second side helmet connection of FIG. 21 (not visible), or any combination thereof, may have a connection type other than described previously, such as, but not limited to a snap connection, a tie connection, a buckle, a magnetic closure, a string or laced closure, an elastic closure, or other connection types.

As illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 21, the flap extending from the neck protector that provides the side helmet connection may exhibit different shapes. Any shape is contemplated so long as the flap provides a side helmet connection with the helmet that allows for coverage of a majority of the vertical distance of the neck, as described previously. Additionally, any features from any of the embodiments of the neck protectors described herein are interchangeable with other neck protectors. For example, the chin connection may be included in any exemplary neck protector described herein. As used herein, the term “helmet connect” refers to any connection between the neck protector and the helmet.

A safety feature may be included in any of the neck protectors described herein to facilitate detaching of the neck protector from the user in the situation where the helmet is forcibly removed from the user (either intentionally or unintentionally). The safety protector prevents strangulation or injury to the user by preventing the neck protector from following the helmet off the user, and allows the neck protector to remain in place around the user's neck while the helmet is removed. Such a safety feature may be present in the form of a quick connect/disconnect arrangement that does not need to be disconnected by the user. That is, the helmet connection may be such that during normal use, the neck protector is secured and connected to the user, but, when a predetermined force is applied to the neck guard, the helmet connection detaches to allow the helmet to be removed. For example, providing a magnet on each side of the helmet and a corresponding mating magnetic for the side helmet connections would provide such a safety feature. In normal use, the neck guard is secured to the helmet with the magnets. If the helmet is forcibly removed, the magnets quickly detach and the neck guard stays behind. The user does not need to detach the magnets (as they would a snap connection).

The neck protectors 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 of the present disclosure are formed of cut resistant materials or puncture resistant materials or combinations thereof. For example, the neck protectors of the present disclosure may be formed of one or more of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, a laminated combination of poly-para-phenylene terephthalamide and cotton, a combination of polyethylene and elastane fibers, or combinations thereof. The neck protectors of the present disclosure may be formed of any cut resistant fabric that is strong, lightweight, breathable, machine washable, or combinations thereof. The neck protectors of the present disclosure may be formed of any material that resists cutting with a sharp object (e.g., an ice skate, blade, knife, projectile, etc.) to protect the user's neck. The neck protectors of the present disclosure may be formed of a puncture resistant fabric.

The neck protectors of the present disclosure may be a single layer of cut or puncture resistant material, laminates of several layers or cut resistant material or, as shown in FIGS. 19A and 19B, formed with outer protective layers 136 of cut resistant material surrounding an inner layer 134 of flexible material. For example, in some examples, this may be a laminated combination of a Kevlar® layer and a cotton layer, which results in a neck protector that is both cut resistant and puncture resistant. In embodiments having a reinforcing material 132, the reinforcing material may be nylon or polyester blend or other suitable materials. The reinforcing material may also have different stiffnesses, according to a specific need of the user.

The dimension of the neck protector of the present disclosure may be adjustable and may be designed to fit various sizes of common users. For example, the neck protector can be designed in sizes Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, etc., or alternatively designed to fit a youth, a junior, or an adult. Generally, the dimensions of any side of the neck protector may be equal or larger than one inch, but may also vary depending on the size and age of the intended user.

The present disclosure also provides for a method for protecting a neck of a user from injury, such as, from laceration or puncture. In a first step, the method provides a neck protector (such as, the neck protectors 100, 200, 300, 400, 500) having a connection device (e.g., the connections 114, 116), a first side helmet connection (e.g., the first side helmet connection 120, 220, 320, 422, 520), and a second side helmet connection (e.g., the second side helmet connection 122, 222, 322, 422, 520). The user couples or connects the first side helmet connection (e.g., the first side helmet connection 120, 220, 320, 422, 520) to a first side of the helmet 12. The user couples or connects the second side helmet connection (e.g., the second side helmet connection 122, 222, 322, 422, 520) to a second side of the helmet 12. The user couples or connects the connection device (e.g., 114, 116) to secure the first end 104 of the neck protector to the second end 106 of the neck protector. After coupling or connecting the first side helmet connection, the second side helmet connection, and the connection device, the neck protector covers the neck of the user to protect the neck from injury.

The aforementioned method may be performed in any sequential order. In an example, the user dons the helmet before coupling the first side helmet connection to the first side of the helmet. In an example, the user dons the helmet before coupling the second side helmet connection to the second side of the helmet, and after coupling the first side helmet connection to the first side of the helmet. In an example, the user dons the helmet after coupling the first side helmet connection to the first side of the helmet, and after coupling the second side helmet connection to the second side of the helmet. In an example, the user dons the helmet before connecting the connection device.

In an example, coupling the first side helmet connection or coupling the second side helmet connection or both comprises snapping the respective helmet connection to the neck protector over a strap of the helmet. In an example, coupling the first side helmet connection or coupling the second side helmet connection or both comprises snapping the respective helmet connection to the helmet. In an example, coupling the first side helmet connection or coupling the second side helmet connection or both comprises securing the respective helmet connection to the helmet with a hook and loop connection. In an example, the method includes coupling a middle portion of the neck protector to a chin strap of the helmet.

The aforementioned description provides a neck protector that is configured to be connected or coupled to a helmet. The neck protector may have one or more additional features included therein. These optional features may be included alone or in combination with other of the features described below. The features are, for example, but not limited to:

A locating device (e.g., visual indicator) and/or a Bluetooth locating device (e.g., an AirTag) may be coupled to or embedded in the neck protector. In this manner, the user may track the location of the neck protector and/or be able to easily visually identify the neck protector.

A communication system may be coupled to or embedded in the neck protector. For example, Bluetooth or radio communications may be coupled to or embedded in the neck protector. A microphone and/or speaker may be coupled to or embedded in the neck protector. Bone conduction listening devices may be coupled to or embedded in the neck protector. Such examples are particularly beneficial in a military or law enforcement configuration to allow the user to communicate discretely with other members of a team.

One or pockets to receiving cooling material may be coupled to or embedded in the neck protector. As may be appreciated, a neck protector, despite being formed of a breathable, lightweight material, may make the user hot. The pockets provided in the neck protector may receive ice or gel pads to reduce excess heat in the neck. In some examples, a cooling system (e.g., a fan or other electric cooling system) may be coupled to or embedded in the neck protector.

Ballistic material or armored plates may be coupled to or embedded in the neck protector to enhance the protective capabilities of the neck protector.

A mask, such as a COVID mask, or KN95 mask, may be coupled to or embedded in the neck protector.

The neck protector may be integral with or coupled to a clavicle portion or bib that extends over the user's shoulders. In some examples, the neck protector is formed as part of a base layer (e.g., a shirt) such that the base layer has the appearance, generally, of a turtleneck.

Accordingly, the neck protector of the present disclosure provides a revolutionary protective neck guard, also referred to herein as neck protector. The neck protector may be tailored specifically for ice hockey players, offering advanced defense against severe neck lacerations, notably targeting the carotid and occipital arteries. Ice hockey, renowned for its inherent dangers posed by sharp skate blades, presents a substantial risk of potentially fatal neck injuries. While existing neck guards provide some protection, they often leave crucial areas exposed, resulting in inadequate safety measures.

The neck guard of the present disclosure provides an integration of connection points on the helmet, strategically positioned to ensure optimal protection for the wearer. Unlike conventional designs, the neck guard of the present disclosure may securely replace the traditional chin strap of the helmet, incorporating connection points that align precisely with vital neck arteries, thereby providing comprehensive coverage. Additionally, the neck guard of the present disclosure may incorporate soft flex areas for enhanced comfort and mobility, facilitating unrestricted head movement, an important advantage over restrictive alternatives.

Functionally, the neck guard of the present disclosure is easily adjustable, fitting snugly around the neck with a rear fastener (e.g., the end connections). Users then attach it to designated connection points on the helmet, ensuring a secure and personalized fit. By replacing the existing helmet chin strap, the neck guard of the present disclosure may seamlessly integrate into the helmet structure, eliminating the need for separate components while enhancing overall safety.

A benefit of the neck protector of the present disclosure is the unparalleled protective capabilities, offering unmatched coverage to safeguard against life-threatening neck injuries. Beyond ice hockey, the neck protector of the present disclosure has applications extending to military and law enforcement contexts, providing crucial protection against neck lacerations without necessitating modifications to the product design.

The method of any preceding clause, wherein coupling the first side helmet connection or coupling the second side helmet connection or both comprises snapping the respective helmet connection to the neck protector over a strap of the helmet.

The method of any preceding clause, wherein coupling the first side helmet connection or coupling the second side helmet connection or both comprises snapping the respective helmet connection to the helmet.

The method of any preceding clause, wherein coupling the first side helmet connection or coupling the second side helmet connection or both comprises securing the respective helmet connection to the helmet with a hook and loop connection.

The method of any preceding clause, further comprising coupling a middle portion of the neck protector to a chin strap of the helmet.

Moreover, features described in connection with one embodiment of the present disclosure may be used in conjunction with other embodiments, even if not explicitly stated above.

Claims

1. A device for protecting a neck of a user from injury, the device comprising:

a body; and

a helmet connection configured to removably couple the body to a helmet,

wherein the body is configured to cover the neck of the user to protect the neck from injury.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the body extends from a first end to a second end, the device further comprises an end connection configured to removably couple the first end to the second end.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the body comprises a first side and a second side, and wherein the helmet connection comprises a first side helmet connection on the first side and a second side helmet connection on the second side.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein one or both of the first side helmet connection or the second side helmet connection comprises:

a flap extending from the body.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein the flap is configured to extend over a helmet side strap.

6. The device of claim 4, wherein one or both of the first side helmet connection or the second side helmet connection further comprises one of:

i) a snap connection, the snap connection comprising:

a first portion on the flap; and

a second portion on the body; or

ii) a hook and loop connection, the hook and loop connection comprising:

one of a hook layer or a loop layer on the flap; and

the other of the hook layer or the loop layer on the body; or

iii) an opening through the flap, the opening configured to extend over a helmet strap.

7. The device of claim 4, the flap further comprises a first flap on the first side and a second flap on the second side, and

a reinforcing material extending along a top edge of the device between the first flap and the second flap.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein, the reinforcing material is disposed inside an outer cover of the body.

9. The device of claim 7, wherein the reinforcing material is disposed outside an outer cover of the body.

10. The device of claim 7, wherein the reinforcing material is configured to provide a rigid support of a chin area of the user.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the body comprises a first side, a second side, and a middle portion extending between the first side and the second side, and wherein the first side and the second side are configured to cover and protect sides of the neck and the middle portion is configured to cover and protect a front of the neck.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein the helmet connection comprises a first side helmet connection configured to couple to a first helmet side strap, a second side helmet connection configured to couple to a second helmet side strap, and a chin strap connection configured to couple to a helmet chin strap.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein the helmet connection is a hook and loop connection having one of a hook layer or a loop layer on the body and the other of the hook layer or the loop layer on the helmet chin strap.

14. The device of claim 1, the body further comprising pockets configured to receive a cooling system or cooling material and/or a communication system coupled thereto or embedded therein.

15. A system for protecting a neck of a user from laceration, the system comprising:

a helmet; and

a neck protector configured to couple to the helmet, the neck protector comprising a helmet connection configured to removably couple the neck protector to the helmet, wherein the neck protector is configured to cover a portion of the neck surrounding a carotid artery to protect the carotid artery from injury.

16. The system of claim 15, the neck protector further comprising a body extending from a first end to a second end; and an end connection configured to removably couple the first end to the second end.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the helmet connection comprises a first side helmet connection configured to couple to a first helmet side strap, and a second side helmet connection configured to couple to a second helmet side strap.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the neck protector further comprises a chin strap connection configured to couple to a helmet chin strap.

19. A method for protecting a neck of a user from injury, the method comprising:

providing a neck protector having a helmet connection comprising a first side helmet connection, and a second side helmet connection;

coupling the first side helmet connection to a first side of a helmet; and

coupling the second side helmet connection to a second side of the helmet,

wherein, after coupling the first side helmet connection and the second side helmet connection, the neck protector covers the neck of the user to protect the neck from injury.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the neck protector further comprises a reinforcing material extending along a top edge of the neck protector between the first side helmet connection and the second side helmet connection.
