BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

(1) Field of the Invention.

The disclosure relates to grinding discs and more particularly pertains to a new grinding disc having fins for facilitating collection of debris using a vacuum type grinder and inhibiting clogging of grinder during use.

(2) Description of Related Art Including Information Disclosed Under 37 CFR 1.97 and 1.98

The prior art relates to grinding discs. The grinding discs known provide for a circular outer shape having consistent spacing with an inwardly facing surface of a shroud of a grinder. Such discs substantially limit air flow between the grinding disc and a shroud of the grinder extending around the grinding disc.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

An embodiment of the disclosure meets the needs presented above by generally comprising a hub having a connection hole configured for attachment to a grinder. A peripheral flange is coupled to and extends outwardly from a peripheral edge of the hub. The peripheral flange is shaped to define a plurality of fins around the peripheral edge of the hub. A plurality of grinding elements is arranged into sets of grinding elements. Each set is positioned on an associated one of the fins along a leading edge of the associated one of the fins.

There has thus been outlined, rather broadly, the more important features of the disclosure in order that the detailed description thereof that follows may be better understood, and in order that the present contribution to the art may be better appreciated. There are additional features of the disclosure that will be described hereinafter and which will form the subject matter of the claims appended hereto.

The objects of the disclosure, along with the various features of novelty which characterize the disclosure, are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this disclosure.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

With reference now to the drawings, and in particular to FIGS. 1 through 8 thereof, a new grinding discs embodying the principles and concepts of an embodiment of the disclosure and generally designated by the reference numeral 10 will be described.

As best illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 8, the finned grinding disc device 10 generally comprises a hub 12. The hub 12 has a connection hole 14 wherein the hub 12 is configured for attachment to a grinder 16. The connection hole 14 may be threaded or utilize conventional connection structure for attachment to the grinder 16. The hub 12 has a central connection section 18 and an extension section 20 extending from the central connection section 18 to a peripheral edge 22 of the hub 12. The extension section 20 is curved wherein the hub 12 is concave extending from the central connection section 18 to the peripheral edge 22 of the hub 12. Each of a plurality of apertures 24 extends through the extension section 20 of the hub 12. The apertures 24 are arranged radially around the connection hole 14.

A peripheral flange 26 is coupled to and extends outwardly from the peripheral edge 22 of the hub 12. The peripheral flange 26 is shaped to define a plurality of fins 28 extending from and around the peripheral edge 22 of the hub 12. Each of the fins 28 has a leading edge 30 and a trailing edge 32 as defined by a direction of rotation imparted by the grinder 16. The leading edge 30 of each of the fins 28 is convexly arcuate extending away from the hub 12. The trailing edge 32 of each of the fins 28 is straight and positioned to extend radially relative to the hub 12. The peripheral flange 26 has a planar grinding surface 34 which faces away from the grinder 16 when the hub 12 is attached to the grinder 16.

A plurality of grinding elements 36 are positioned on the peripheral flange 26. Each of the grinding elements 36 has a polygonal shape 38. It is intended that polygonal is most generally defined as a closed typically geometric shape having at least three straight sides. However, the polygonal shape 38, as shown specifically in the drawing figures, is a star shape. The plurality of grinding elements 36 is arranged into sets 40 of grinding elements 36. Each set 40 of grinding elements 36 is positioned on an associated one of the fins 28 along the leading edge 30 of the associated one of the fins 28. Each of the grinding elements 36 of each set 40 of grinding elements 36 is inset from the leading edge 30 of the associated one of the fins 28. Each of the grinding elements 36 may have a plurality of planar facets 42 facing the leading edge 30 of the associated one of the fins 28 with or without planar facets facing away from the leading edge 30. Each of the planar facets 42 extends perpendicularly from the planar grinding surface 34 of the peripheral flange 26. Each set 40 of grinding elements 36 includes a plurality of interior grinding elements 36A and an end grinding element 36B. The end grinding element 36B is positioned distally relative to the hub 12. The end grinding element 36B of each set 40 of grinding elements 36 is proportionally larger in size than each of the interior grinding elements 36A of each set 40 of grinding elements 36. Each interior grinding element 36A of each set 40 of grinding elements 36 is consistent in size to each other interior grinding element 36A.

It is contemplated that there would be variations to the specific configurations shown in the drawing figures. As specifically shown, each grinding element 36 may be a five pointed star shape but other polygonal shapes and variations in the number of points to the star shape would be within the scope of the teaching of this disclosure. Variations in the number of fins 28 around the peripheral edge 22 would also be contemplated including having between four and nine or more fins 28 extending around the peripheral edge 22 of the hub 12. There can also be variations to the number of interior grinding elements 36A in each set 40 of grinding elements 36 including between 3 and 7 or more interior grinding elements 36A.

In an alternative embodiment shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, sets 40 of grinding elements 36 alternate with a single protrusion 66 on the fins 28 extending from the hub 12.

In use, the finned grinding disc device 10 is attached to the grinder 16 in a conventional manner and the grinder is used in a conventional way. The shape and configuration of the grinding elements 36 on the fins 28 enhance functionality including air and debris flow into the grinder 16 while inhibiting gumming of the action of the grinder 16 during use.

With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of an embodiment enabled by the disclosure, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by an embodiment of the disclosure.

Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the disclosure. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the disclosure to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the disclosure. In this patent document, the word โ€œcomprisingโ€ is used in its non-limiting sense to mean that items following the word are included, but items not specifically mentioned are not excluded. A reference to an element by the indefinite article โ€œaโ€ does not exclude the possibility that more than one of the element is present, unless the context clearly requires that there be only one of the elements.
