The present application claims priority to, and the benefit of, U.S. Provisional Application No. 63/671,803, which was filed on Jul. 16, 2024, and is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
The present invention relates generally to the field of self-defense coat devices. More specifically, the present invention relates to a coat with embedded metal quills. Accordingly, the present disclosure makes specific reference thereto. Nonetheless, it is to be appreciated that aspects of the present invention are also equally applicable to other like applications, devices and methods of manufacture.
By way of background, this invention relates to improvements in self-defense coat devices. Generally, people who are vulnerable to assault or kidnapping like women and children may lack the means to defend themselves against their assailants. Children may not understand what is happening and be unable to quickly call for help if they are being assaulted. Accordingly, people may fear walking alone in the early morning or nighttime hours due to the risk of assault and abduction. Further, it is necessary for women and children to feel safer doing day-to-day activities.
Accordingly, a coat constructed in accordance with the invention can be easily worn to be used for self-defense purposes wherever safety is a concern. Further, it is often necessary for people to do activities which place them in uncomfortable locations. These locations can be anywhere and it is often necessary for people to feel safe while doing activities in such locations. Accordingly, self-defense items would have to be carried by the person and most are forgotten before a situation comes up in which they would be useful.
Accordingly, there is a demand for an improved self-defense coat device that allows users to protect themselves if necessary. More particularly, there is a demand for a self-defense coat device that users can wear and transport with ease.
Therefore, there exists a long felt need in the art for a self-defense coat device that provides users with a coat or jacket featuring embedded metal quills that cause injury to an assailant during an assault or abduction. There is also a long felt need in the art for a self-defense coat device that allows users to press a button on the garment to expand the quills if they are put in danger. Further, there is a long felt need in the art for a self-defense coat device that functions as a standard coat or jacket with the quills retracted, offering comfort and warmth while outdoors. Moreover, there is a long felt need in the art for a self-defense coat device that helps prevent serious injury and kidnapping, especially for vulnerable people like women and children walking alone. Further, there is a long felt need in the art for a self-defense coat device that provides a safe and convenient way to defend yourself against an assailant. Finally, there is a long felt need in the art for a self-defense coat device that includes retractable quills which can be presented or hidden with ease.
The subject matter disclosed and claimed herein, in one embodiment thereof, comprises a self-defense coat device. The device is a modified multipurpose coat, cape, or jacket featuring retractable quills. The self-defense coat device comprises a coat component that is configured in the shape of a traditional coat or jacket. With the push of a button, the user may expand or retract the quills from the coat component. Further, the retractable quills are comprised of sharp, pointed ends that injure and ward off an assailant to keep the user safe. Thus, the coat component is especially useful for vulnerable people. The retractable quills can also be retracted and hidden to allow the coat component to simply function as a traditional jacket. Further, the coat component comprises multiple sizes and colors to fit the user's preference. The fabric of the coat component is very thick in width in order to successfully hide the quills when retracted.
In this manner, the self-defense coat device of the present invention accomplishes all of the forgoing objectives and provides users with a coat with retractable quills. Specifically, the device is a coat that could protect a user with quills that expand from the inside of the coat. The device can comprise a button to cause this expansion or retraction.
The following presents a simplified summary in order to provide a basic understanding of some aspects of the disclosed innovation. This summary is not an extensive overview, and it is not intended to identify key/critical elements or to delineate the scope thereof. Its sole purpose is to present some general concepts in a simplified form as a prelude to the more detailed description that is presented later.
The subject matter disclosed and claimed herein, in one embodiment thereof, comprises a self-defense coat device. The device is a modified coat or jacket featuring retractable quills. The self-defense coat device comprises a coat component that contains quills that can be retracted into the coat component. Further, the retractable quills are activated by a push button on the inside of the coat component. Thus, the coat component is relatively thick, easy to use, and helpful for self-defense purposes. Further, the coat component can come in many different sizes to allow it to be worn by children as well.
In one embodiment, the self-defense coat device allows users to protect themselves when they are not able to carry any other self-defense devices. Further, the retractable quills allow for the coat to function as a traditional coat as well. Accordingly, users can manually extract or retract the quills depending on the situation allowing the coat to function both as a device for warmth, as well as a device for self-defense.
In one embodiment, the self-defense coat device comprises a coat component that is configured in the shape of a traditional coat or jacket with a thick main body and two arm sleeves. The coat component comprises an exterior surface, an interior surface, and a securing means. However, the coat component can be any suitable shape and size as is known in the art, as long as the coat component is sized and shaped to be worn by the user.
In one embodiment, the coat component comprises retractable quills. These retractable quills are stored in the inner lining of the coat component which is between the exterior surface and the interior surface. Thus, the coat component must be relatively thick in order to successfully conceal all the retracted quills. When desired by the user, these quills can extend out from the inner lining so that they push through the exterior surface of the coat component.
In one embodiment, the retractable quills are utilized when the user feels they are in danger. The retractable quills are secured into the inner lining of the coat component via any suitable securing means as is known in the art, such as adhesives, mechanical fasteners, etc. Further, the retractable quills can be any suitable sharp object as is known in the art, as long as the retractable quills allow a user to feel safe and secure when wearing the device. Further, the length and diameter of the retractable quills may vary widely, as it is important only that it be reasonably comfortable to fit within the inner lining of the coat component and allow extension from the coat component with ease.
In one embodiment, the retractable quills can be extended or retracted, as needed. The retraction allows them to be hidden from sight within the inner lining of the coat component. Typically, the retractable quills comprise two push button mechanisms. One push button mechanism extends the quills and the other push button mechanism retracts the quills. Typically, the retractable quills are extended or retracted via a linear actuator powered by a battery. Once extended, the quills can be locked in the desired height or locked in a completely collapsed configuration. Generally, the retractable quills can be extended or collapsed and stored as needed, depending on the needs and/or wants of a user. Accordingly, the coat component is of varying shape which contains retractable quills, either integral, or attached, as to allow collapse and expansion of the quills using a single hand.
In one embodiment, the push button mechanisms are triggered by two relatively small, circular buttons which are integrated into the exterior surface of the coat component. The buttons are integrated near the end of the arm sleeve of the coat component. When pressed by the user, the extend button triggers the push button mechanism and the linear actuator to allow the retractable quills to extend from the inner lining. Further, when it is desired for the quills to be retracted, the retract button can be pressed to allow for the linear actuator to once again retract the quills within the inner lining of the coat component for storage.
In one embodiment, the self-defense coat device comprises an optional fur-lined interior surface for more comfortable wear for the user. The coat component functions as a traditional coat or jacket so any and all designs, material, and construction that can be added to a traditional coat or jacket would apply to the coat component as well.
In one embodiment, the self-defense coat device is manufactured from cotton, wool, fleece, polyester or other suitable materials as is known in the art, or a combination of such materials which would also ensure that the retractable quills are hidden within the device.
In yet another embodiment, the self-defense coat device comprises a plurality of indicia.
In yet another embodiment, a method of protecting a user from danger via a coat with retractable quills is disclosed. The method includes the steps of providing a self-defense coat device comprising a coat component with retractable quills. The method also comprises placing the user's arms through the arm sleeves of the coat component. Further, the method comprises pushing the button on the arm sleeve to trigger the extension of the retractable quills. The method also comprises walking without fear of danger. Finally, the method comprises pushing the button again to retract and store the retractable quills.

The present invention, in one exemplary embodiment, is a novel self-defense coat device. The self-defense coat device comprises a coat component that is configured in the shape of a traditional coat or jacket. With the push of a button, the user may expand or retract the quills from the coat component. Further, the retractable quills are comprised of sharp, pointed ends that injure and ward off an assailant to keep the user safe. Thus, the coat component is especially useful for vulnerable people. The retractable quills can also be retracted and hidden to allow the coat component to simply function as a traditional jacket. The present invention also includes a novel method of protecting a user from danger via a coat with retractable quills. The method includes the steps of providing a self-defense coat device comprising a coat component with retractable quills. The method also comprises placing the user's arms through the arm sleeves of the coat component. Further, the method comprises pushing the button on the arm sleeve to trigger the extension of the retractable quills. The method also comprises walking without fear of danger. Finally, the method comprises pushing the button again to retract and store the retractable quills.
Referring initially to the drawings, FIGS. 1A-B illustrate a perspective view of one embodiment of the self-defense coat device 100 of the present invention. In the present embodiment, the self-defense coat device 100 is an improved self-defense coat device 100 that provides a user 106 with a coat with retractable spikes. Specifically, the self-defense coat device 100 comprises a coat component 102 and retractable quills 104. Thus, the coat component 102 is warm and protective with retractable quills 104. Further, the retractable quills 104 retract into the coat component 102 to be hidden for storage.
Generally, the self-defense coat device 100 allows users 106 to feel safe and protected without the use of a different self-defense tool. Thus, users 106 do not need to carry additional self-defense objects to protect themselves, they can merely wear the coat device 100. Further, the retractable quills 104 allow a user 106 to not have to carry anything else to protect themselves while in dangerous areas. Accordingly, users 106 can retract or extend the retractable quills 104 solely via a button 108, saving users 106 significant time and energy and preventing uncomfortableness.
Further, the self-defense coat device 100 comprises a coat component 102 that is configured in the shape of a traditional coat or jacket with a main body 110 and two arm sleeves 112. The coat component 102 comprises an exterior surface 114, an interior surface 116, and an inner lining 118 between the two. However, the coat component 102 can be any suitable shape and size as is known in the art, as long as the coat component 102 is sized and shaped to be worn by the user 106.
Additionally, the coat component 102 comprises retractable quills 104 which are stored within the inner lining 118. Thus, the coat component 102 must be comprised of a relatively thick material 120 in order to successfully conceal the retractable quills 104. The retractable quills 104 can either fold in on themselves to retract into the coat component 102 or they can simply pull back and be hidden within the coat component 102. When desired by the user 102, these retractable quills 104 can extend out from the inner lining 118 so that they push through the exterior surface 114 of the coat component 102.
Generally, the retractable quills 104 are utilized when the user 106 feels they are in danger. The retractable quills 104 are secured into the inner lining 118 of the coat component 102 via any suitable securing means 122 as is known in the art, such as adhesives, mechanical fasteners, etc. Further, the retractable quills 104 can be any suitable sharp object 124 as is known in the art, as long as the retractable quills 104 allow a user 106 to feel safe and secure when wearing the device 100. Further, the length and diameter of the retractable quills 104 may vary widely, as it is important only that it be reasonably comfortable to fit within the inner lining 118 of the coat component 102 and allow extension from the coat component 102 with ease.
As shown in FIGS. 2A-B, the retractable quills 104 can be extended or retracted, as needed. The retraction allows them to be hidden from sight within the inner lining 118 of the coat component 102. Typically, the retractable quills 104 comprise two push button mechanisms 200. The two push button mechanisms 200 allow the retractable quills 104 to be extended or retracted via a linear actuator 202 powered by a battery 203 to a fully extended or a completely collapsed configuration. In this configuration, the retractable quills 104 can be extended or collapsed and stored as needed, depending on the needs and/or wants of a user 106. Accordingly, the coat component 102 comprises varying shapes to accommodate all sizes of people including children.
Further, the two push button mechanisms 200 are triggered by two relatively small, circular buttons 108, 109 which are integrated into the exterior surface 114 of the coat component 102. The two buttons 108, 109 are integrated near the end of one of the two arm sleeves 112 of the coat component 102. When pressed by the user 102, one button 108 triggers the push button mechanism 200 and the linear actuator 202 is activated to allow the retractable quills 104 to extend from the inner lining 118. Accordingly, when it is desired for the retractable quills 104 to be retracted, the second button 109 can be pressed again to allow for the linear actuator 202 to once again retract the retractable quills 104 within the inner lining 118 of the coat component 102 for storage.
As shown in FIG. 3, the self-defense coat device 100 is manufactured from cotton, wool, fleece, polyester or other suitable materials 300 as is known in the art, or a combination of such materials which would also ensure that the retractable quills 104 are fully hidden within the device 100. The retractable quills 104 may be numerous enough to completely covered the exterior surface 114 of the coat component 102. Further, there may be small slits 302 within the exterior surface 114 which are positioned such that the retractable quills 104 can extend out through without damaging the material 300 of the coat component 102.
In yet another embodiment, the self-defense coat device 100 comprises a plurality of indicia 304. The coat component 102 of the device 100 may include advertising, a trademark, or other letters, designs, or characters, printed, painted, stamped, or integrated into the coat component 102, or any other indicia 304 as is known in the art. Specifically, any suitable indicia 304 as is known in the art can be included, such as but not limited to, patterns, logos, emblems, images, symbols, designs, letters, words, characters, animals, advertisements, brands, etc., that may or may not be coat, self-defense, or brand related.
FIG. 4 illustrates a flowchart of the method protecting a user from danger via a coat with retractable quills. The method includes the steps of at 400, providing a self-defense coat device comprising a coat component with retractable quills. The method also comprises at 402, placing the user's arms through the arm sleeves of the coat component. Further, the method comprises at 404, pushing the button on the arm sleeve to trigger the extension of the retractable quills. The method also comprises at 406, walking without fear of danger. Finally, the method comprises at 408, pushing the button again to retract and store the retractable quills.
Certain terms are used throughout the following description and claims to refer to particular features or components. As one skilled in the art will appreciate, different users may refer to the same feature or component by different names. This document does not intend to distinguish between components or features that differ in name but not structure or function. As used herein “self-defense coat device”, “coat device”, “retractable quills device”, and “device” are interchangeable and refer to the self-defense coat device 100 of the present invention.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, the self-defense coat device 100 of the present invention can be of any suitable size and configuration as is known in the art without affecting the overall concept of the invention, provided that it accomplishes the above stated objectives. One of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that the self-defense coat device 100 as shown in FIGS. 1-4 is for illustrative purposes only, and that many other sizes and shapes of the self-defense coat device 100 are well within the scope of the present disclosure. Although the dimensions of the self-defense coat device 100 are important design parameters for user convenience, the self-defense coat device 100 may be of any size that ensures optimal performance during use and/or that suits the user's needs and/or preferences.
Various modifications and additions can be made to the exemplary embodiments discussed without departing from the scope of the present invention. While the embodiments described above refer to particular features, the scope of this invention also includes embodiments having different combinations of features and embodiments that do not include all of the described features. Accordingly, the scope of the present invention is intended to embrace all such alternatives, modifications, and variations as fall within the scope of the claims, together with all equivalents thereof.
What has been described above includes examples of the claimed subject matter. It is, of course, not possible to describe every conceivable combination of components or methodologies for purposes of describing the claimed subject matter, but one of ordinary skill in the art may recognize that many further combinations and permutations of the claimed subject matter are possible. Furthermore, to the extent that the term “includes” is used in either the detailed description or the claims, such term is intended to be inclusive in a manner similar to the term “comprising” as “comprising” is interpreted when employed as a transitional word in a claim.
1. A self-defense coat device that provides a coat with retractable spikes, the self-defense coat device comprising:
a coat component; and
retractable quills;
wherein the retractable quills are secured to the coat component and can retract or extend as needed; and
further wherein the retractable quills can be compacted for storage within the coat component.
2. The self-defense coat device of claim 1, wherein the coat component is configured in the shape of a conventional coat with a main body and two arm sleeves.
3. The self-defense coat device of claim 2, wherein the coat component comprises an exterior surface, an interior surface, and an inner lining that is positioned between the exterior surface and the interior surface.
4. The self-defense coat device of claim 3, wherein the retractable quills are retracted or extended through a push button mechanism which activates a linear actuator.
5. The self-defense coat device of claim 4, wherein the push button mechanism is triggered by a first and a second button placed on the exterior surface of one of the two arm sleeves on the coat component.
6. The self-defense coat device of claim 5, wherein the user can press the first button which activates the linear actuator and allows the retractable quills to extend from the inner lining.
7. The self-defense coat device of claim 6, wherein the user can press the second button which activates the linear actuator and allows the retractable quills to retract back into the inner lining.
8. The self-defense coat device of claim 7, wherein the exterior surface of the coat component comprises small slits which are positioned such that the retractable quills can extend through them.
9. The self-defense coat device of claim 8, wherein the coat component functions as a conventional coat and is used for warmth or protection against weather.
10. The self-defense coat device of claim 9, wherein the coat component is comprised of a cotton, wool, fleece, polyester, or other suitable material which is thick enough to completely conceal the retractable quills.
11. The self-defense coat device of claim 10, wherein the coat component is available in varying sizes and styles.
12. The self-defense coat device of claim 11 further comprising a plurality of indicia.
13. A self-defense coat device that provides a coat with retractable spikes, the self-defense coat device comprising:
a coat component configured as a conventional coat with a main body and two arm sleeves on sides of the main body; and
retractable quills;
wherein the coat component comprises an exterior surface, an interior surface, and an inner lining positioned between the exterior surface and the interior surface;
wherein the retractable quills can be retracted or extended as needed;
wherein the retractable quills are secured to the inner lining of the coat component via a securing means; and
further wherein the retractable quills are able to be completely hidden by the exterior surface of the coat component.
14. The self-defense coat device of claim 13 further comprising a plurality of indicia.
15. The self-defense coat device of claim 13, wherein the retractable quills are controlled via a push button mechanism which activates a linear actuator.
16. The self-defense coat device of claim 15, wherein users can push a first button placed on the exterior surface of one of the arm sleeves of the coat component to extend the retractable quills.
17. The self-defense coat device of claim 16, wherein users can push a second button placed on the exterior surface of one of the arm sleeves of the coat component to retract the retractable quills.
18. The self-defense coat device of claim 17, wherein the exterior surface of the coat component comprises small slits positioned so that each of the retractable spikes can extend fully from the inner lining of the coat component without harming material of the coat component.
19. The self-defense coat device of claim 18, wherein the coat component is available in various sizes.
20. A method of protecting a user from danger via a coat with retractable quills, the method comprising the following steps:
providing a self-defense coat device comprising a coat component with retractable quills;
placing the user's arms through the arm sleeves of the coat component;
pushing the button on the arm sleeve to trigger the extension of the retractable quills;
walking without fear of danger; and
pushing the button again to retract and store the retractable quills.
