The present application claims priority to, and the benefit of, U.S. Provisional Application No. 63/694,977, which was filed on Sep. 16, 2024, and is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
The present invention relates generally to the field of food storage containers. More specifically, the present invention relates to a dual-function plate device that can be used as a plate, wherein two devices can be attached to each other to form a sealed food container. Accordingly, the present disclosure makes specific reference thereto. Nonetheless, it is to be appreciated that aspects of the present invention are also equally applicable to other like applications, devices, and methods of manufacture.
Family gatherings, buffet-style events, and potlucks often result in an abundance of leftover food, which many guests are eager to take home. However, transporting these leftovers on ordinary plates frequently proves to be a challenge. Plates, being uncovered and lacking secure barriers, make it easy for food to spill over the edges. Sauces, liquids, and gravies can slosh around unpredictably, leading to unwanted messes during transportation. This can create a significant risk of spillage in vehicles, bags, or refrigerators once the food arrives at its destination.
Additionally, without proper containment, food items can easily slide off or mix with other dishes, especially when multiple plates are stacked together, leading to food waste and cross-contamination. Even when carefully arranged, uncovered plates remain vulnerable to tipping and leaking, causing inconvenience and frustration. The issue becomes particularly problematic with foods that contain high moisture content, such as salads with dressings, stews, or juicy meats, which are prone to leaking out from the sides or dripping uncontrollably.

As noted above, there exists a long-felt need in the art for an improved food transportation device. There also exists a long-felt need in the art for a dual-function plate device. More specifically, there exists a long-felt need in the art for a dual-function plate device that can be used as a secure food transport container. In addition, there exists a long-felt need in the art for a dual-function plate device that can be used as a secure food transport.
The present invention, in one exemplary embodiment, is comprised of a dual-function plate device comprised of a body preferably made from either paper or plastic material. The body can take the form of any plate or bowl known in the art. Specifically, the body includes a flat bottom wall and at least one raised edge, which extends above the bottom wall to prevent contents from spilling out.
The top of the raised edge is equipped with two fasteners, a first fastener and a second fastener. These fasteners are preferably of the reciprocating type, allowing two devices to be removably attached to each other to form a sealed container for food transportation. The first fastener has a debossed edge, while the second fastener features an embossed edge. To facilitate separating the two devices after attachment, each one may include at least one pull tab.
The invention also includes a method for using the device. First, a device is provided, featuring a body with a raised edge and two fasteners. A food item can then be placed in the body and eaten from it. If food remains, a second device can be secured upside down onto the first device using their respective fasteners to create a sealed container.
Thus, the dual-function plate device offers a significant advantage as it provides an improved food transport solution. Specifically, two devices can be connected to form a secure food container, or a single device can function as a plate. This dual-purpose design overcomes the limitations of conventional food transport devices.
