The golf bag is a necessary article on a golf course and is mainly used for holding golf balls, clubs, and other golf-related articles. Newer golf bag designs alternatively have attached collapsible legs so that when extended or deployed, the golf bag stably stands upright at an angle allowing the included golf clubs to be presented to the golfer in an upright manner on the golf course, at the golf range, or at home. One overlooked accessory to the stand-up golf bag is a cover that when draped over and around the bag protects the golf clubs, as well as the golf bag itself, from rain, wind, dust, and other degradation caused by exposure to various natural, and sometimes unnatural, such as fertilizer, pesticides, etc., elements on the golf course.
Disclosed is a golf bag cover and, more particularly, a lightweight golf bag cover that protects the aforementioned stand-up golf bag with attached collapsible legs, from weather exposure and other elements. The golf bag covers described herein provide for efficient stowage and transport since after use, the bag is collapsable and insertable into a self-contained pocket within the cover itself. When expanded, the cover encompasses (wraps around) and protects the entire golf bag and golf clubs stowed therein, while also having the ability to still use the collapsible legs of the bag so that the protected golf bag can stand up as designed.
Covers that protect golf bags are known. Conventional golf bag covers are available to protect a golf bag against inclement weather during play or protects the golf bag during travel. Such bags are exemplified by, for instance, U.S. Pat. No. 2,718,251 that discloses a full-length golf bag cover that includes an end portion for protecting the heads of golf clubs. U.S. Pat. No. 5,220,950 discloses a full-length golf bag cover and has a number of openings for convenient access to the golf clubs and other items contained in the golf bag. Additionally, U.S. Pat. No. 5,443,156 discloses a full-length golf bag cover which attaches to the golf bag.
Further, U.S. Pat. No. 4,953,768 relates to a rain cover for a golf bag with extendable legs where a split opening is closed around the lower portion of the bag nearly to the top of the opening, leaving only enough space at the top of the opening for the structural member of a stand which connects the stand to the bag to pass through. The opening partially covers the legs when extended but provides coverage while in the standing position.
Additionally, U.K. Patent Publication No. GB 2,445,625 relates to a flexible waterproof golf bag cover including a body configured to contain a golf bag including a set of clubs therein, where the bag cover includes a zipper which allows access to an open end of a golf bag, to allow retrieval of a golf club. The rear side of the golf bag cover may include second and third apertures to allow legs of the golf bag to extend outside of the golf bag cover.
Further, U.S. Patent Publication No. 2019/0374826 relates to a golf bag cover that is configured to couple to the bottom portion of a golf bag in a closed position and can selectively cover the golf bag and clubs in an open position. In the closed position, the golf bag cover can collapse into an integrated pouch and remain attached to the base of the golf bag. The cover includes a bag coupling that may include adjustable or elastic straps to attached directly to the golf bag. This cover does not mention its ability to accommodate collapsible golf bag legs but the substantial opening clearly allows for that type of use.
Further, U.S. Pat. No. 2,985,212 relates to a foldable waterproof golf bag cover that provides easy access to the clubs contained within. The golf bag cover includes a body portion having one opening end (bottom) and a second opening end (top) where the bag cover includes two apertures in the cover which allows for threading through a carrying strap, which is attached to the golf bag. The bottom portion includes a zipper which extends from the bottom of the cover upwards towards the top of the cover to ease insertions of the golf bag cover over a golf bag. This patent does not mention accommodating a golf bag with legs.
U.S. Pat. No. 5,383,505 relates to a protective cover with a removable top portion which protects and covers a golf bag. The protective cover includes an opening for allowing the golf bag to be inserted therein along with access to the golf clubs when in use. The cover may include a storage pocket for storing items. The cover includes a middle portion which includes an opening that may extend along the full middle portion allowing for the golf bag to be inserted into the cover and/or allowing access to a storage pocket which may be provided along a side of the golf bag.
Additionally, U.S. Patent Publication No. 2005/0236080 relates to a light-weight flexible cover (hood) for protecting a golf bag and associated clubs from precipitation, dust, and related elements during use, storage, and transport. The golf bag cover includes an opening with a VELCRO® closing. This reference only relates to a hood for a golf bag, however, it teaches in paragraph that in one embodiment, the invention includes one or more small, detachable auxiliary flaps, positioned opposite from closure flap of the bag cover. These flaps are designed to accommodate retractable legs and carrying handles of walking bag legs.

The disclosed golf bag cover addresses the limitations and drawbacks of traditional golf bag covers noted above by introducing a comprehensive protective cover designed specifically for standing golf bags, which are commonly referred to as “stand bags.” The primary objective of the golf bag covers provided herein is to provide a portable, easily removable cover that not only protects the golf clubs but also shields the entire golf bag, including its pockets and collapsible legs, from adverse weather conditions, dust, and potential physical damage.
The protective cover is comprised of a durable, water-resistant material or water-proof material, ensuring that both allow the clubs and the bag to remain dry and unharmed by elements such as rain, dust, or direct sunlight. This one-piece cover is designed to easily slip over a stand golf bag and features a main opening through which the bag is inserted. Once positioned, the cover secures itself below the golf bag's pockets using a VELCRO® strap or like strap, ensuring a snug fit that prevents the cover from slipping off.
Unique to the golf bag cover disclosed herein is that the cover includes an opening at the top, allowing easy access to the golf clubs. This top opening is designed to be sufficiently wide to accommodate the removal or insertion of clubs without the need to remove the entire cover. Additionally, strategic openings align with the bags pocket locations are incorporated, providing convenient access to the bags contents without compromising protection.
A crucial aspect of the design is the consideration for the golf bag's collapsible legs. The cover described herein accommodates this feature by including a wrap-around segment at the middle, which attaches under the golf bag's legs with VELCRO® straps or similar. This innovative design allows the legs to extend and collapse freely, enabling the golf bag to stand as intended while fully protected.
The removable golf bag cover described herein represents a significant advancement in the field of golf equipment. Its innovative design addresses the previously unmet need for a protective solution that covers the entire golf bag while allowing easy access to clubs and bag contents. The covers compatibility with the collapsible legs of a stand bags further underscores its practicality and usefulness. Through its durable, substantially water-resistant, water repellant and/or waterproof construction and thoughtful features, this golf bag cover enhances the golfing experience by providing peace of mind and convenience to golfers under various conditions. By protecting valuable equipment from the elements and potential damage, this invention contributes to the enjoyment and longevity of the game of golf.
The golf bag cover is constructed from high quality, durable, water-resistant, water repellant materials suitable for protecting against various weather conditions, including rain, dust, and UV radiation. The choice of material balances durability with lightweight properties, ensuring that the cover does not add significant weight to the golf bag, thereby maintaining ease of transport and use. Such materials may be selected from (but not limited to) one or more of cotton cloth, synthetic cloth, synthetic and natural rubbers, polyethylene-cotton, plastic polymer cloth, polyolefin-cotton, dacron, rayon, polyamides, nylon cloth, spandex, laminated fabrics, layered fabrics, GORTEX®, and combinations thereof.
Preferably, the entire cover is made of a substantially water-resistant, water repellant and/or waterproof material, so that the golf bag and the golf clubs that are covered therein will be protected when the equipment, i.e., the cover that encompasses the golf bag and clubs, are exposed to watery environments on the course or when golfing occurs during rainstorms. For example, in some embodiments, the cover is constructed of plastic, cotton cloth, synthetic cloth, synthetic and natural rubbers, polyethylene-cotton, plastic polymer cloth, polyolefin-cotton, dacron, rayon, polyamides, nylon cloth, spandex, laminated fabrics, layered fabrics, GORTEX®, etc., or combinations thereof, or the cover is constructed of a non-waterproof material which is rendered waterproof by a suitable coating or lining, such as by using conventional “waterproofing” substances, such as SCOTCHGARD®, waxes, etc. The material should be strong yet adequately collapsible and flexible, i.e. “soft,” so that the cover is able to be compactly folded or rolled so that when stored, it can be placed with its storage pocket. The cover is in some embodiments dyed with a solid color or various contrasting colors for identification and eye pleasing purposes.
In some embodiments, the top portion of the golf bag cover is comprised of a substantially clear or transparent material for allowing convenient viewing of the various golf clubs through the top portion of the golf cover (12). Such materials may also be selected from (but not limited to) one or more of cotton cloth, synthetic cloth, synthetic and natural rubbers, polyethylene-cotton, plastic polymer cloth, polyolefin-cotton, dacron, rayon, polyamides, nylon cloth, spandex, laminated fabrics, layered fabrics, GORTEX®, and combinations thereof.
The golf bag cover described herein comprises at least the following core components: (i) pockets, optionally including attached VELCRO® elements that attach pockets, towel rings, or umbrella sleeves, to the cover, (ii) zippers, (iii) straps, and (iv) buckles or clips. Each of these core components and their inter-relationships are described in further detail below.
During a round of golf, golfers utilize various small items. For example, they utilize ball markers, pencils, score cards, divot repair tools, etc. Generally, a golfer will utilize the majority of the tools while playing on the green or immediately thereafter. Additionally, storing the small items in the pocket of a golf bag presents disadvantages. The pockets on golf bags are often voluminous and intended to store large items. As a result, it is often difficult to find a small item in the large pockets. Additionally, when the small items are stored with large items they are often concealed by the large item.
In view of the above, any number of external pockets may be attached (e.g., sewn) to the body of the golf bag cover to enable the golfer to store and carry items (e.g., balls, tees, divot tools, wallets, phones, snacks, water, etc.) necessary to play the game of golf.
Any number of external pockets may be attached (e.g., sewn) to the body of the golf bag cover to enable the golfer to store and carry items (e.g., balls, tees, divot tools, etc.) necessary to play the game of golf.
Also, as an alternative to a pocket, VELCRO® elements are provided in some embodiments that attach pockets, towel rings, or umbrella sleeves, to the cover are also contemplated. This provide more options to the golfer and flexibility for different available products based on the individual's needs Although the pockets are exemplified to include fasteners such as zippers, the fasteners are not limited and in other embodiments are other types such as a hook and loop fastener, e.g., VELCRO®, buttons and buttonholes, hook and eye closures, or snap fasteners. Such fastening elements are in some embodiments secured to the cover in a permanent or semi-permanent arrangement, e.g., sewn, or by using an adhesive or similar material.
Further, in some embodiments, the golf bag cover and/or pockets include a water repellant for reducing water penetration into one or more pockets of the golf bag cover or into the golf bag itself. For example, the pockets may be made of a coated polyester material or a double-coated polyester material, where the polyester coating may be a polyester-polyurethane resin coating and/or a polyurethane resin coating. The coated polyester advantageously does not shrink under high temperature weather conditions, e.g., above ninety degrees Fahrenheit, etc. The pocket (or pockets) may be manufactured, coated, and then attached to the planar surface, e.g., sewn, heat sealed or glued, etc., of the golf bag cover. Additionally, once the pocket is attached to the planar surface of the golf bag cover, the securing points, e.g., seams, stitching, glue points, etc., may be coated with a water repellant. The pocket (or pockets) may be selectively coupled with planar surface at an edge opposite a securing point by a plurality of complementary fasteners, e.g., hook and loop fasteners, etc. The fasteners and/or the edges of the pockets or the seam where each pocket attaches to the plane or zipper, or other access opening into each pocket may be coated with a water repellant. The water repellant reduces the penetration of water or other liquids in the treated pocket or a portion of the planar surface, which helps items stored within the pocket dry (or stay dry) under inclement weather conditions or when inadvertently exposed to water, e.g., positioning the golf bag near an irrigation head, standing water, etc.
Further, when the golf bag cover is not in use, it can fold into an incorporated designated pocket.
Golf bag cover embodiments may include multiple zippers (and types of zippers) to allow access to different aspects of the golf bag without having to remove the cover. It is noted that different locations on the body of the golf bag cover includes a set of auxiliary zipper fasteners which may be opened to enable the golfer to gain access to the internal pockets and similar storage compartments that are part of the conventional golf bag (1) and lie inside the golf bag cover.
Zippers include, but are not limited to, conventional zipper fastening systems or those zipper fastening systems that secure the golf bag cover (of golf bag) with locks. The zipper may have a single or double pull slider arrangement. The zipper may be a two-way zipper.
It is noted that relatively long main zipper fasteners (20 or 23) run longitudinally along the first and second sides of the body (18 or 19) of golf bag cover (1). A zipper fastener is exemplified (but not limiting), since it may be quickly and easily manipulated by the golfer. However, other suitable fasteners, e.g., hook and loop VELCRO® strips, buttons, snaps, etc., is in some embodiments used in substitution of a zipper. The main zipper fastener is opened when it is desirable to locate the pockets within golf bag.
As is best shown in FIG. 1, an opening is also created at the frontside of the body of golf bag cover below the main zipper fastener for the top section sealable opening (15). The opening is sized to accommodate therethrough the standard golf bag handle so that it visible and easily available for the golfer to grasp. Thus, it may be appreciated that surrounding the golf bag by the golf bag cover (1) will not interfere with the golfer's normal use of the bag during play or hinder access to the clubs that are carried within the bag.
Any utility straps are affixed to cover by glue, are sewn, fastened, or affixed by other similar means, at points of between one-half to three inches, thereby forming a strap with three or more inserts. In some embodiments, the straps utilized are made from exemplified materials selected from, but not limited to, one or more of cotton cloth, synthetic cloth, synthetic and natural rubbers, polyethylene-cotton, plastic polymer cloth, polyolefin-cotton, dacron, rayon, polyamides, nylon, laminated fabrics, layered fabrics, GORTEX®, and combinations thereof.
As is exemplified in FIG. 3, openings are created at the backside (16) of the body of golf bag cover below the main zipper fastener for the top section sealable opening (15). The openings are sized to accommodate therethrough the straps with buckles (2) which permit the golf bag cover to be secured around the golf bag and the golf bag stands (7). During off season or when the golfer chooses, the buckles can be unfastened, i.e., opened, so that the tension on the straps is released so that the golf bag is removed from the golf bag cover for storage or for use without the cover.
Any buckle type or clip is contemplated within the embodiments of the golf bag cover and are made of, for instance, metal, plastics, leather or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, the buckles or clips are in the shape of a square, rectangle, tapered rectangle and oval. The buckles or clips are affixed to the straps by glue, are sewn, fastened, or affixed by other similar means, at points of between one-half to three inches, thereby forming a buckle or a clip attached to a strap. As noted above, the straps with buckles or clips comprise the connecting means(2) that permits the golf bag cover to be secured around the golf bag and the golf bag stands (7).
As noted above, any number of external pockets may be attached, e.g., sewn, to the body of the golf bag cover to enable the golfer to store and carry items, e.g., balls, tees, divot tools, wallets, phones, snacks, water, etc., necessary to play the game of golf. Further, any number of external pockets may be attached, e.g., sewn, to the body of the golf bag cover to enable the golfer to store and carry items, e.g., balls, tees, divot tools, etc., necessary to play the game of golf.
As an alternative to a pocket, VELCRO® elements attach pockets, towel rings, or umbrella sleeves, to the cover are also contemplated. This provide more options to the golfer and flexibility for different available products based on the individual's needs.
Therefore, other components such as umbrellas, design element patches, towel loops, tee holders, snack or water holders are also contemplated that are attached to the outside surface of the golf bag cover, in various embodiments.
The described golf bag cover is designed for ease of customization, ease of portability, and ease of use in multiple environments.
The described golf bag cover is easily portable and lightweight relative to other covers similar of its size.
The application of the golf bag cover is straightforward and user friendly. A golfer simply needs to: open the main opening of the cover. Slip the cover over the top of the stand golf bag until it fully encases the bag. Secure the cover in place below the golf bags pockets using an integrated VELCRO® strap, buckle strap or clip strap that comprise the connecting means. Adjust the wrap around segment under the collapsible legs of the golf bag and secure the VELCRO®, buck or clip straps comprising the connecting means that are provided, ensuring that the legs can extend and collapse without hindrance.
To access golf clubs or the contents of the bag's pockets, the golfer can use the designated openings without needing to remove the entire cover. This design allows for quick access to equipment and personal items while keeping them protected.
