Surgical stapling instrument having a single lockout mechanism for prevention of firing

A surgical instrument for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures simultaneously severs and staples tissue clamped in an end effector comprising an elongate channel, which holds a staple cartridge, and a pivotally attached anvil. An E-beam firing bar engages the channel and selectively engages the anvil during distal firing movements, wherein the tissue is severed and stapled driven upward from the staple cartridge to form against the anvil. In particular, a wedge integral to the staple cartridge is driven distally by a middle pin of the firing bar to effect stapling. A single lockout of the elongate channel responds to the presence of the wedge sled in its unfired position to allow the firing bar to fire. Otherwise, the single lockout prevents firing when the staple cartridge is missing or spent.

Surgical stapling device for performing circular anastomoses

This application is directed to a surgical stapling device for performing circular anastomoses. The stapling device includes a retractable trocar which is slidably supported by an anvil retainer and movable from a retracted position located within the anvil retainer to an advanced position extending from the anvil retainer. The trocar defines a sensor and is operatively connected to an indicator assembly. The indicator assembly is operatively associated with an anvil assembly such that the indicator will not move from a fire-not ready position to a fire-ready position until an anvil assembly has been mounted to the anvil retainer.

Real time self-adjusting calibration algorithm

A method of calibrating glucose monitor data includes collecting the glucose monitor data over a period of time at predetermined intervals. It also includes obtaining at least two reference glucose values from a reference source that temporally correspond with the glucose monitor data obtained at the predetermined intervals. Also included is calculating the calibration characteristics using the reference glucose values and the corresponding glucose monitor data to regress the obtained glucose monitor data. And calibrating the obtained glucose monitor data using the calibration characteristics is included. In preferred embodiments, the reference source is a blood glucose meter, and the at least two reference glucose values are obtained from blood tests. In additional embodiments, the calculation of the calibration characteristics is obtained using linear regression and in particular embodiments, least squares linear regression. Alternatively, the calculation of the calibration characteristics is obtained using non-linear regression.

Electric drill apparatus

An electric drill apparatus having a low profile is provided which comprises an annular cutter, a motor for rotating the annular cutter, a rotary shaft assembly for rotating the annular cutter attached to its leading end about a rotating, a rotation reduction mechanism disposed between the motor and rotary shaft assembly for transmitting a driving force of the motor to the annular cutter through the rotary shaft assembly, a feed mechanism responsive to an operation of a manual handle, for moving the rotary shaft assembly along with a straight line to advance or retract the annular cutter attached to the rotary shaft assembly with respect to a workpiece, and an adhesion base for securing the electric drill apparatus to the workpiece. The annular cutter has a plurality of cutting blades comprised of cemented carbide tips fixed on its lower end, thereby it is capable of rotating at a high speed. The rotary shaft assembly has a rotating shaft which rotates in a direction different from that of a rotating shaft of the motor, thereby the drill apparatus has a low profile.

Materials and structures for enhancing the performance of organic light emitting devices

A device is provided, having an anode, a cathode, and a first organic layer disposed between the anode and the cathode. The first organic layer comprises a material that produces phosphorescent emission when a voltage is applied between the anode and the cathode. A second organic layer is disposed between the first organic layer and the cathode. The second organic layer is in direct contact with the first organic layer. The second organic layer may comprise an aromatic hydrocarbon material, comprising an aromatic non-heterocyclic hydrocarbon core optionally substituted, and wherein the substituents are the same or different, and each is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroalkyl, substituted aryl, substituted heteroaryl and heterocyclic groups. The second organic layer may comprise a material having a molecular dipole moment less than about 2.0 debyes, such that the device has an unmodified external quantum efficiency of at least about 3% and a lifetime of at least about 1000 hours at an initial luminance of about 100 to about 1000 cd/m2. The second organic layer may be in direct contact with the cathode, or there may be a separate organic layer between the second organic layer and the cathode.
