Surgical stapling apparatus

The present disclosure provides for a loading unit for use with and/or supportable on a distal end of a surgical stapling apparatus. The loading unit includes a housing portion including a connecting feature, preferably in the form of a pair of axially oriented and diametrically opposed slots formed therein, and a drive assembly slidably supported within the housing portion of the loading unit, the drive assembly including a pair of axially spaced apart radially inwardly extending fingers, wherein when the distal end of a control rod of a surgical stapling apparatus is axially advanced in the direction of and engages the resilient fingers, the distal end of the control rod biases the resilient fingers radially outward into the slots of the housing portion.

Bipolar coagulating instrument

A bipolar coagulating instrument includes a blade-like electrode assembly comprising an upper planar face and a lower planar face separated by an intermediate portion of insulating material therebetween. The upper face includes first and second electrodes separated by a first insulating member, and the lower face includes third and fourth electrodes separated by a second insulating member. The first and second insulating members are out of correlation one with respect to the other, such that there is at least one region in which the first electrode overlies the third electrode, and at least one other region in which the first electrode overlies the fourth electrode. A cutting electrode is provided between the upper and lower faces, extending marginally beyond the periphery thereof.

Tissue-derived mesh for orthopedic regeneration

An implant including a substantially cohesive aggregate comprising bone-derived particles. Cohesiveness is maintained by a member of mechanical interlocking, engagement of adjacent bone-derived particles with one another through engagement with a binding agent, thermal bonding, chemical bonding, or a matrix material in which the bone-derived particles are retained. The aggregate is shaped as a one-dimensional or two-dimensional body.

Apparatus for controlling a fastener driving tool, with user-adjustable torque limiting control

An improved hand-held fastener driving tool is provided with an adjustable torque limiting control. The tool is portable, and is electrically powered using either a battery pack or a power cord as a power source. The tool drives collated fasteners (e.g., screws) into solid objects. The motor current is measured to determine the amount of torque being applied to a screw by the motor and mechanical drive components. As the screw bottoms out, the motor torque increases to a point where it exceeds the user-adjusted torque limiting control. The motor is automatically turned off at that point, thereby preventing the screw from being stripped.

Everting heart valve

The present invention provides methods and apparatus for endovascularly replacing a patient's heart valve. The apparatus includes a replacement valve and an expandable anchor configured for endovascular delivery to a vicinity of the patient's heart valve. In some embodiments, the replacement valve is adapted to wrap about the anchor, for example, by everting during endovascular deployment. In some embodiments, the replacement valve is not connected to expandable portions of the anchor. In some embodiments, the anchor is configured for active foreshortening during endovascular deployment. In some embodiments, the anchor includes expandable lip and skirt regions for engaging the patient's heart valve during deployment. In some embodiments, the anchor comprises a braid fabricated from a single strand of wire. In some embodiments, the apparatus includes a lock configured to maintain anchor expansion. The invention also includes methods for endovascularly replacing a patient's heart valve. In some embodiments, the method includes the steps of endovascularly delivering a replacement valve and an expandable anchor to a vicinity of the heart valve, wrapping at least a portion of the replacement valve about the anchor, and expanding the anchor to a deployed configuration.

Application identification sensor

An application identification sensor comprises a plurality of emitters configured to transmit light into a tissue site and a detector configured to receive the light after tissue absorption. The detector generates a signal responsive to the intensity of the light and communicates the signal to a monitor. An information element is readable by the monitor so as to identify a sensor application. The monitor presets at least one user-selectable operational parameter in response to the information element.

Anticipated query generation and processing in a search engine

A search system monitors the input of a search query by a user. Before the user finishes entering the search query, the search system identifies and sends a portion of the query as a partial query to the search engine. Based on the partial query, the search engine creates a set of predicted queries. This process may take into account prior queries submitted by a community of users, and may take into account a user profile. The predicted queries are be sent back to the user for possible selection. The search system may also cache search results corresponding to one or more of the predicted queries in anticipation of the user selecting one of the predicted queries. The search engine may also return at least a portion of the search results corresponding to one or more of the predicted queries.
