Two-piece end-effectors for robotic surgical tools

In one embodiment of the invention, a robotic surgical tool having opposing jaws, the working element of the robotic surgical tool is made of a different material from the drive element of the robotic surgical tool. The two elements may be manufactured independently and assembled together at a later stage. The material comprising each element may thus have properties more appropriate to the function each element plays in the robotic surgical tool. For example, the metal selected to comprise the blade of a surgical scissor may be corrosion resistant and capable of being sharpened to a high degree.

Methods for weed control using plants having dicamba-degrading enzymatic activity

The invention provides methods for weed control with dicamba and related herbicides. It was found that pre-emergent applications of dicamba at or near planting could be made without significant crop damage or yield loss. The techniques can be combined with the herbicide glyphosate to improve the degree of weed control and permit control of herbicide tolerant weeds.

Selectively absorbable/biodegradable, fibrous composite constructs and applications thereof

A family of selectively absorbable/biodegradable, fibrous composite constructs includes different combinations of biostable and absorbable/biodegradable yarns assembled as initially interdependent, load-bearing components, transitioning to exhibit independent functional properties during in vivo end-use. The family of constructs consists of two groups, one group is made of fiber-reinforced composites of high compliance, absorbable matrices of segmented polyaxial copolyesters reinforced with multifilament yarn constructs, which are combinations of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fibers and at least one absorbable/biodegradable fiber selected from silk fibers and multifilament yarns made from linear segmented, l-lactide copolyesters and poly (3-hydroxyalkanoates, are useful in orthopedic, maxillofacial, urological, vascular, hernial repair and tissue engineering applications. The second group is made of coated and uncoated, warp-knitted mesh constructs for use in hernial, vascular, and urological tissue repair and tissue engineering.

Variable fixation viewing distance scanned light displays

In addition to varying the luminance and chrominance levels of each voxel in an image, a viewing distance for objects within the image is varied to display a multi-focal, three-dimensional image. The focal distance of the voxels is determined by a depth map that indicates a fixation viewing depth of each object. When the image is viewed, there is a natural correspondence between the accommodation and vergence of the viewer's eye. The focal distance of the voxels displayed in the image are modulated using, for example, one or more dynamically variable focus mirrors or lenses, a plurality of fixed focus mirrors or lenses having different focal distances, a plurality of different length optical paths with different focal distance ranges, or at least one spatial light modulator. Light used to produce the image is scanned in two orthogonal directions either before or after the light is focus modulated.
