Force switch

A mechanical force switch to be disposed along a longitudinal device axis of a medical device includes an electrically conductive switching piston to form a first electrical contact of the switch, a hollow body, an end stop, a bias device, and an electrically conductive second contact of the switch electrically insulated from the piston. The piston is movably disposed in the body hollow along the axis to define different switch-making and -breaking positions. The piston is also movably disposed in a cavity of the stop and the stop is disposed in the body. The stop can be a smooth or threaded puck. The bias device surrounds the piston and imparts bias against it to retain it in one of the two positions until an external axis force overcomes the bias, at which time the switch indicates a state changeover. The switch can be normally open or closed.

Oriented polymer implantable device and process for making same

A device is formed by a discontinuous process into a bone screw, plate, or fastener, wherein the device has a degree of polymer alignment and strength, and upon reheating above glass transition temperature of the polymer, the device remains dimensionally stable, as it maintains its dimensions, strength, and degree of polymer orientation. In practice of the present invention, the polymer slug is pressed into the die cavity by the actuation of ram press, causing the slug to conform to the die cavity.

SURGICAL STAPLER FOR APPLYING A LARGE STAPLE THROUGH SMALL DELIVERY PORT AND A METHOD OF USING THE STAPLER TO SECURE A TISSUE FOLD

A surgical fastener having a base, and two legs extending away from the base. The legs have distal end segments. The fastener has a first shape wherein the distal end segments bend towards each other in so that they are adjacent and form the fastener into a first loop. The fastener has a second shape wherein the distal end segments are spaced apart from each other along substantially an entire length thereof. The fastener has a third shape wherein the distal end segments bend towards each other so that they are adjacent and form the fastener into a second loop, wherein the second loop has a width greater than a width of the first loop.

Surgical stapler for applying a large staple through a small delivery port and a method of using the stapler to secure a tissue fold

A method of deploying a surgical fastener into a patient by introducing the fastener into a body of a patient while the fastener is in a first shape having a first loop with a back span and an original size and shape. The method then involves moving end segments of the fastener away from each other substantially along an entire length thereof while keeping the back span in substantially its original size and shape. The method then involves forming the fastener into a second loop having a width greater than a width of the first loop.

Wire saw

A device for cutting a length of pipe includes a clamp portion for clamping around a length of pipe and a bow moveable with respect to the clamp portion that retains a loop of diamond embedded wire. The device further includes a feed for driving the bow with respect to the clamp portion and a detector for detecting bending of the wire and a control responsive to the detector for controlling feed rates. The device is made of modular parts and has synchronizing arms for clamping around a length of pipe. In one embodiment, the wheels are retained in enclosures with slots through which the cutting wire passes.

Apparatus and method for implanting collapsible/expandable prosthetic heart valves

Apparatus for delivering a prosthetic heart valve into a patient by means that are less invasive than conventional open-chest, open-heart surgery. The prosthetic valve may be collapsed while in a delivery device. When the valve reaches the desired implant site in the patient, the valve can be released from the delivery device, which allows the valve to re-expand to the configuration in which it can function as a heart valve. For example, the delivery device may be constructed to facilitate delivery of the prosthetic valve into the patient via the apex of the patient's heart.

Ultrasound apparatuses for thermally-induced renal neuromodulation

Methods and apparatus are provided for thermally-induced renal neuromodulation. Thermally-induced renal neuromodulation may be achieved via direct and/or via indirect application of thermal energy to heat or cool neural fibers that contribute to renal function, or of vascular structures that feed or perfuse the neural fibers. In some embodiments, parameters of the neural fibers, of non-target tissue, or of the thermal energy delivery element, may be monitored via one or more sensors for controlling the thermally-induced neuromodulation. In some embodiments, protective elements may be provided to reduce a degree of thermal damage induced in the non-target tissues.

Method for replicating explicit locks in a data replication engine

An automated method is provided of replicating a locking protocol in a database environment for performing I/O operations wherein the database environment includes a plurality of databases. A locking protocol is performed that includes one or more explicit locking operations on objects in a first database of the database environment. The one or more explicit locking operations are replicated in one or more other databases in the database environment. At least some of the explicit locking operations are performed asynchronously with respect to the explicit locking operations performed in the first database. I/O operations are performed at the first database of the database environment that are associated with the one or more explicit locking operations implemented in the first database.
