Knife/firing rod connection for surgical instrument

A surgical instrument including a frame, an elongate portion, a firing rod and an end effector is disclosed. The elongate portion extends distally from the frame and defines a longitudinal axis. The firing rod is disposed at least partially with the elongate portion and is proximally and distally translatable with respect to the elongate portion. The end effector includes a knife and is disposed at a distal portion of the elongate portion. Distal movement of the firing rod causes a distal end of the firing rod to link with the knife. Proximal movement of the firing rod moves the linked knife proximally to a first predetermined position. The knife is unlinked from the firing rod when the firing rod has been translated proximally to a second predetermined position.

Methods of selectively forming a material using parylene coating

Methods for depositing a material, such as a metal or a transition metal oxide, using an ALD (atomic layer deposition) process and resulting structures are disclosed. Such methods include treating a surface of a semiconductor structure periodically throughout the ALD process to regenerate a blocking material or to coat a blocking material that enables selective deposition of the material on a surface of a substrate. The surface treatment may reactivate a surface of the substrate toward the blocking material, may restore the blocking material after degradation occurs during the ALD process, and/or may coat the blocking material to prevent further degradation during the ALD process. For example, the surface treatment may be applied after performing one or more ALD cycles. Accordingly, the presently disclosed methods enable in situ restoration of blocking materials in ALD process that are generally incompatible with the blocking material and also enables selective deposition in recessed structures.

RF surgical generator and method for driving an RF surgical generator

Until now, ohmic consumers have been used to abruptly complete the output signal in RF surgical generators. Considering an RF surgical generator comprising a power supply with at least one storage capacitor and a controllable switching device with at least one energy storage device (e.g., a transformer) by which an RF output signal that can be delivered to an RF surgical instrument is generated, it is suggested herein that a regenerative device be provided between the energy storage device and the storage capacitor. Furthermore, a control mechanism is used for controlling the switching device and the regenerative device such that, if the RF output signal is to be completed, the regenerative device is energized for at least part of the time, and the energy storage is at least partially discharged in the storage capacitor.

Techniques for Migrating Active I/O Connections with Migrating Servers and Clients

A technique for modifying an input/output (I/O) connection type between a client and a server includes determining, by the client, when at least partial storage access control for the client is to be migrated from a first virtualized I/O server to a second virtualized I/O server. An I/O connection type, from among multiple available I/O connection types available between the client and the second virtualized I/O server, is then selected by the client when the at least partial storage access control for the client is to be migrated. The selected I/O connection type is then communicated, by the client, to the second virtualized I/O server, which is configured to facilitate storage access for the client using the selected I/O connection type.

Detecting botnets

A method is disclosed for distributed detection of botnets via a plurality of sensors on a network. According to embodiments, DNS information, including domain names and addresses, is received at a sensor, the number of unique subnets corresponding to a domain name is determined and an alert is sent to other sensors when the number of unique subnets exceeds a first threshold. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

Belief tracking and action selection in spoken dialog systems

An action is performed in a spoken dialog system in response to a user's spoken utterance. A policy which maps belief states of user intent to actions is retrieved or created. A belief state is determined based on the spoken utterance, and an action is selected based on the determined belief state and the policy. The action is performed, and in one embodiment, involves requesting clarification of the spoken utterance from the user. Creating a policy may involve simulating user inputs and spoken dialog system interactions, and modifying policy parameters iteratively until a policy threshold is satisfied. In one embodiment, a belief state is determined by converting the spoken utterance into text, assigning the text to one or more dialog slots associated with nodes in a probabilistic ontology tree (POT), and determining a joint probability based on probability distribution tables in the POT and on the dialog slot assignments.

Methods and apparatus for providing electronic program guides

A method of generating on a display device an electronic program guide for broadcast channels. Electronic program guide information for a plurality of broadcast channels is received at an electronic terminal from a broadcast media server. The electronic program guide information includes live video streams and/or snapshot pictures from programs that are presently being broadcast on a plurality of broadcast channels. A graphical arrangement of a plurality of objects is generated on the display device. Each of the objects is associated with a different one of the broadcast channels. The live video stream and/or the snapshot picture from the program that is presently being broadcast on the associated broadcast channel is displayed on a defined surface of each of the associated objects. A three-dimensional graphical arrangement may be generated from the objects. Each of the objects may extend with a respective virtual depth into the display device that is controlled to indicate to a user how much time remains in the program that is presently being broadcast on the associated broadcast channel. Related electronic terminals and media servers are disclosed.
