Robotically-controlled surgical end effector system with rotary actuated closure systems
A self contained motor-powered disposable loading unit for use with a robotic system configured to generate control systems therefor. The disposable loading unit may contain a battery that is retained in a disconnected position when the disposable loading unit is not in use and is moved to a connected position when the disposable loading unit is coupled to the robotic system to permit the motor to be selectively powered thereby. Indicators may be supported on the disposable loading unit to indicate when the axial drive assembly thereof is in a starting position and an ending position. Another indicator may be provided to indicate when the anvil assembly is in a closed position.

Seals and sealing methods for a surgical instrument having an articulated end effector actuated by a drive shaft
Sealing assemblies and methods are disclosed for sealing a surgical instrument having an internal drive shaft subject to lateral displacement. A sealing assembly includes a rigid portion shaped to interface with an instrument shaft of the surgical instrument. A laterally oriented slot is open at a radially perimeter location and configured to receive an o-ring seal via the perimeter location. Apertures are disposed on opposing sides of the slot and open to the slot. The apertures are configured to receive the drive shaft there through and are larger than the drive shaft to accommodate lateral displacement of the drive shaft. The slot includes opposing internal sides spaced to interface with opposed axial surfaces of the o-ring seal. The seal inhibits axial transmission of an insufflated gas and/or bodily fluids while accommodating lateral displacement of the drive shaft.

Methods and systems for detecting clamping or firing failure
Systems and methods are provided for detecting failure in clamping of a material and/or firing of a staple into a clamped material and indicating such failure to a user on a user interface. The system and methods are particularly suited for use with end effectors having closing and/or firing mechanisms coupled to an actuator. By monitoring a driving parameter of an actuator that effects the clamping and/or firing, the systems and methods provide an indication of failure in response to the monitored drive parameter. In some embodiments, an indication of failure is output when the monitored drive parameter is outside an acceptable range of desired driving parameters during clamping and/or firing. The disclosed systems and methods are particularly beneficial when used for minimally invasive surgery.

Methods and systems for indicating a clamping prediction
End effectors with closing mechanisms, and related tools and methods to facilitate clamping, are provided. An example surgical tool comprises a first and second jaw movable between a closed grasped or clamped configuration and an open configuration. The tool further comprises a soft grip mode for grasping the tissue at a first force during which a separation parameter between the jaws is measured, and a therapeutic clamping mode in which the jaws clamp on the body tissue at a force greater than the grasping force. The methods comprise grasping the body tissue between jaw members, measuring the separation parameter between jaws, indicating on a user interface the separation parameter for comparison to a desired separation parameter, and then releasing the body tissue for repositioning or therapeutically clamping the body tissue in response to the separation parameter indication.

Messaging system apparatuses circuits and methods of operation thereof
A messaging system may include a messaging client device that may be configured to receive an impermanent text message and may be further configured to manage the impermanent text message in accordance with a message management policy associated with the impermanent text message. The messaging system may further include an impermanent messaging server configured to validate the messaging client device as complying with the message management policy prior to authorizing a transmission of the impermanent text message to the messaging client device. The messaging system may include a distributed network gateway server configured to validate the messaging client device as complying with a message management policy prior to authorizing transmission of the impermanent text message to the messaging client device.

Indicator for knife location in a stapling or vessel sealing instrument
Systems and methods are provided for displaying an image of a tracked tool on a user interface, wherein at least a portion of the tool is hidden from view in any image on a user interface at any point during a procedure. The tool may include a cutting tool having jaws for clamping a material and a knife for cutting the clamped material, and superimposing an indicator of a knife position on the display during and/or after cutting. The knife position may include a location and/or orientation of the knife, including any or all of a pre-cut, cut-complete, cut-incomplete and an exposed position. The disclosed systems and methods allows a user to view the knife position in applications where the knife may not be visible to a user, which is particularly useful for clamping and cutting a body tissue with a robotic surgical system in minimally invasive procedures.

Medical characterization system
A medical characterization system is configured to input medical-related continuous parameters and discrete data so as to calculate a characterization timeline indicative of a physiological condition of a living being. A data source is in sensor communications with a patient so as to generate a continuous parameter. The data source also provides test data responsive to the patient at a test time. The test data is available to a characterization processor at a result time. The characterization processor is also responsive to the continuous parameter so as to generate a medical characterization as a function of time. A characterization analyzer enables the characterization processor to update the medical characterization in view of the test data as of the test time.

RESPIRATORY EVENT ALERT SYSTEM
A respiratory monitoring system can include an acoustic respiratory sensor that obtains acoustic information from a patient and one or more processors in communication with the acoustic respiratory sensor. Such processors can receive a respiratory rate value derived from the acoustic information. This respiratory rate value can reflect an averaged set of respiratory rate values over a period of time. The one or more processors can also receive an indication of a respiratory abnormality that occurred during the same time period. Further, the one or more processors can output the averaged respiratory rate value together with a respiratory event indicator reflecting the respiratory abnormality.

Detector controlled illuminating system
An illuminating device coupled with sensors or an image acquisition device and a logical controller allows illumination intensity and spectrum to be varied according to changing user needs. The system provides illumination to areas according to the principles of correct lighting practice for the optimal performance of visual tasks in the most efficient, cost effective manner. Aspects of the invention include: lighting fixtures which adapt to ambient lighting, movement, visual tasks being performed, and environmental and personal conditions affecting illumination requirements at any given instant. Lighting fixtures having spatial distribution of spectrum and intensity, providing both “background” room lighting, and “task” lighting.

Monitoring blood constituent levels in biological tissue
In accordance with the invention, a low coherence interferometer is used to non-invasively monitor the concentration of glucose in blood by shining a light over a surface area of human or animal tissue, continuously scanning the light over a two dimensional area of the surface, collecting the reflected light from within the tissue and constructively interfering this reflected light with light reflected along a reference path to scan the tissue in depth. Since the reflection spectrum is sensitive to glucose concentration at particular wavelengths, measurement and analysis of the reflected light provides a measure of the level of glucose in the blood. The measurement of glucose is taken from multiple depths within blood-profused tissue, and sensitivity is preferably enhanced by the use of multiple wavelengths. Noise or speckle associated with this technique is minimized by continuously scanning the illuminated tissue in area and depth.
