Actuation mechanisms for surgical instruments

The present disclosure provides a surgical instrument, such as a tissue sealing instrument, with an elongate shaft and an end effector. The end effector includes a first jaw and a second jaw that includes a staple cartridge with a plurality of staples for engaging tissue. The instrument further includes a drive member for closing the jaws and engaging the staples, and an actuation mechanism, such as a coil, in contact with the drive member. The actuation mechanism is configured to translate the drive member distally through the first jaw (instead of through the staple cartridge as in conventional surgical stapling instruments). Eliminating the internal channel for the actuation coil from the staple cartridge provides more space in the cartridge for the staples, allowing for the use of taller staples and/or a more compact and maneuverable instrument.

A fastener cartridge can comprise fastener cavities arranged in longitudinal rows. A first fastener having a first configuration and a second fastener having a second configuration can be stored within a longitudinal row. First fasteners having a first configuration can be stored within a first longitudinal row and second fasteners having a second configuration can be stored within a second longitudinal row. Each first fastener can have a proximal leg, or leg portion, extending at a first proximal angle and a distal leg, or leg portion, extending at a first distal angle and each second fastener can have a proximal leg, or leg portion, extending at a second proximal angle and a distal leg, or leg portion, extending at a second distal angle. The first proximal angle can be different than the second proximal angle and/or the first distal angle can be different than the second distal angle.

Various methods include forming an anvil body from a first material and a deformable anvil tip from a second material and attaching the deformable anvil tip to a distal end of the anvil body with a deformable second attachment member. Other methods include molding a deformable anvil tip to a distal end of an anvil body.

Fastener cartridge assembly comprising an anvil and different staple heights

An end effector for a surgical fastening instrument is disclosed. The end effector comprises a frame, a first jaw, and a second iaw. The first iaw comprises a cartridge body, a plurality of fastener cavities defined in the cartridge body, an arcuate row of first fasteners removably stored in the cartridge body, and an arcuate row of second fasteners removably stored in the cartridge body. The second jaw comprises an arcuate anvil configured to deform the first fasteners to a first fired height and the second fasteners to a second fired height. The first fired height is different than the second fired height. The end effector further comprises first fastener-supporting surfaces configured to advance the first fasteners toward the arcuate anvil during a fastener firing stroke and second fastener-supporting surfaces configured to advance the second fasteners toward the arcuate anvil during the fastener firing stroke.

A face mask including a body portion configured to be secured to a user's face and cover a mouth and nasal passages of the user, a processor, and an oximetry sensor operably positioned at the user's nose when the body portion is secured to the user's face. In some implementations, the oximetry sensor includes at least one emitter configured to emit light into tissue of the user's nose and at least one detector configured to detect at least a portion of the emitted light after passing through the tissue and transmit one or more signals to the processor responsive to detected light. In some implementations, the face mask is configured to wirelessly transmit the one or more physiological parameters to a mobile computing device.

A method is provided to scroll a calendar user interface (UI) comprising: displaying on a device display screen a visible range of a calendar UI, wherein the calendar UI includes a display grid that includes individual date display panes that are associated with individual dates, wherein the date panes are arranged in rows corresponding to weeks and columns corresponding to days of the week and wherein the visible range of the calendar UI includes multiple rows of date panes; receiving user input to indicate a scroll direction in which to scroll the display grid to display a different date range that includes earlier or later date display panes; and in response to the user input, scrolling the calendar UI by rows to the different date range.
