Description

BACKGROUND

This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application Ser. No. 63/654,957, filed Jun. 1, 2024, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.

FIELD

The present invention relates to sheets. In particular, the invention relates to a sheet system that is customizable and adaptable for the users of the sheets.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART

Sheets are widely used in various applications, including bedding, and medical settings. Traditionally, sheets are made from woven or non-woven fabrics and are designed to provide comfort, protection, or utility depending on their intended use. In the context of bedding, sheets serve as a covering for mattresses and are commonly made from materials such as cotton, linen, polyester, and blends thereof. These materials are selected for their breathability, durability, and ease of maintenance.

While conventional sheets have been effective in meeting basic functional requirements, there remains a need for improved designs that enhance user comfort, durability, and adaptability. Issues such as fabric wrinkling, inadequate moisture-wicking properties, and poor fit on mattresses have led to ongoing innovations in sheet design and material composition. Furthermore, specialized sheets are increasingly being developed to address specific needs, such as antimicrobial properties for healthcare applications, temperature regulation for improved sleep quality, and elasticized edges for a secure fit.

Given the increasing consumer demand for enhanced sheet performance, there is a continuous need for novel sheet designs. The present system seeks to address these challenges by introducing an improved sheet with innovative features tailored to meet the evolving needs of users.

Standard sheets come as a bottom sheet and a top sheet. Frequently when a couple share a bed the two people do not share the same preferences for the use of the sheets. One person may prefer to sleep with the sheets in one position versus another. Therefore, there is a need for sheets that provide an individual with the ability to customize their experience when using the sheets.

Referring to FIG. 1, shown is an embodiment of the sheet system 100. The sheet system 100 comprises first sheet 10 and a second sheet 20.

In the embodiment shown, the first sheet 10 is a “fitted sheet”. A fitted sheet is a sheet that is adapted to be secured to a mattress by taking elastic portions 11 of the first sheet 10 and placing them around the corners of the mattress.

In an embodiment, the elastic portions 11 of the first sheet 10 are located at each corner of the first sheet 10. In an embodiment, the elastic portions 11 form the perimeter of the first sheet 10.

Elastic portions 11 of a sheet are typically formed by incorporating materials or structures that provide stretchability and recovery of the sheet. Elastic portions 11 can be made from blended elastomeric fibers such as spandex, rubber, or elastane. In an embodiment, first sheet 10 can have layers of elastic polymers, such as polyurethane, silicone, or thermoplastic elastomers.

The first sheet 10 is attached to the second sheet 20 at a seam 15. The second sheet 20 is a “flat” or “top” sheet. By “flat” or “top” sheet it is meant a sheet that is not fitted and that is traditionally placed over the bottom sheet, which may be a fitted sheet.

Both the first sheet 10 and second sheet 20 may be made of fabrics and materials that are customarily used for bedding. Examples of materials used for sheets are, but not limited to, cotton, linen, polyester, bamboo, silk, microfiber, and flannel.

The first sheet 10 and the second sheet 20 are connected at the central area of both sheets. The connection between the first sheet 10 and the second sheet 20 forms a seam 15. In an embodiment, the seam 15 extends vertically in the central area of the sheets. By extending vertically it is meant that it runs lengthwise from the head area of the bed to the foot area of the bed. In an embodiment, the seam 15 is formed via stitching down the central area of the second sheet 20 and first sheet 10. In an embodiment the seam 15 is formed from elastic material. In an embodiment, the seam 15 is formed by hot sealing the central portion of the first sheet 10 and the second sheet 20 together.

In an embodiment, the sheet system 100 is manufactured so that the sheets are interconnected to form the seam 15. In an embodiment, the second sheet 20 is formed by sewing two flat sheets to the central area of the first sheet 10. In an embodiment, the first sheet 10 and the second sheet 20 are buttoned down the central area of the first sheet 10 and second sheet 20 to form the seam 15. In an embodiment, the first sheet 10 and the second sheet 20 are connected magnetically down the central area of the first sheet 10 and second sheet 20 to form the seam 15. In an embodiment, the first sheet 10 and the second sheet 20 are zippered down the central area of the first sheet 10 and second sheet 20.

Referring to FIGS. 1-5, shown is an embodiment of the sheet system 100.

In an embodiment, the top perimeter 12 of the second sheet 20 aligns with edge portion 22 of the first sheet 10. Edge portion 22 of the first sheet 10 contacts the top perimeter edges of the mattress.

There is a cut 14 in the second sheet 20. The cut 14 in the second sheet 20 extends from the top perimeter 12 of the second sheet 20 to approximately 30-50% down the second sheet 20. In an embodiment, the cut 14 extends between 25% to 60% down the second sheet 20. In an embodiment, the cut 14 extends between 10% to 70% down the second sheet 20.

Additionally, there is a cut 17 in the second sheet 20 between the seam 15 and the bottom perimeter 13 of the second sheet 20. The cut 17 extends from the bottom perimeter 13, located at the foot of the mattress to the seam 15 of the second sheet 20. The cut 17 in the second sheet 20 extends from the bottom perimeter 13 of the second sheet 20 to approximately 5-30% up the second sheet 20. In an embodiment, the cut 17 extends between 5% to 40% up the second sheet 20.

Cut 14 and cut 17 form two sides of the second sheet 20, with the two sides forming four sheet portions in the second sheet 20. When looking down on second sheet 20, the first sheet portion 31 is formed in the top left corner of the second sheet 20. The second sheet portion 32 is formed in the top right corner of the second sheet 20. The third sheet portion 33 is located at the bottom left corner of the second sheet 20. The fourth sheet portion 34 is located at the bottom right corner of the second sheet 20. The first sheet portion 31 is coextensive with the third sheet portion 33. The second sheet portion 32 is coextensive with the fourth sheet portion 34. The first sheet portion 31 and the third sheet portion 33 are separated from the second sheet portion 32 and the fourth sheet portion 34 by the seam 15.

It should be understood that cut 14 and cut 17 may be formed via the severance of portions of a unitary sheet, or by the joining of separate sheet, or sheet portions, at the seam 15.

In an embodiment, the length of the first sheet 10 and the second sheet 20 are generally the standardized lengths of sheets (twin, full, queen, king, California King). In an embodiment, the first sheet 10 is between 80 to 84 inches in length and between 60 to 72 inches in width. In an embodiment, the second sheet 20 is between 98 to 102 inches in length and 104-118 inches in width. The sheet system 100 provides easier washing since the first sheet 10 and the second sheet 20 are connected. The sheet system 100 makes it easier to make a bed since it is easier to determine which is the top and bottom of the sheet. Additionally, it is easier to make a bed after sleeping as only pulling on each side is needed to make the bed.

The sheet system 100 prevents a bed mate from encroaching on another's sleeping space. The cut 17 in the bottom of the second sheet 20 allows for each person to choose whether the bottom is tucked or untucked to allow for their feet to be contained or not. Each of the four sheet portions permits individuals using the bed to have individualized experiences, both with their upper torso and their lower body. For example, one person may have the third sheet portion 33 tucked in while the other person may the fourth sheet portion 34 untucked.

The sheet system 100 permits a more peaceful night sleep for when a bed mate moves, so as not to yank a portion of sheet or completely uncover another person. The sheet system 100 permits privacy for people in the bed by creating different portions of the bed. The sheet system 100 prevents having to pull covers off a bed mate who is already asleep before you enter the bed and had taken your portion of sheet or having to wake the person if they have taken your sleeping space. The cut 14 from the top to the approximate mid-line still allows for intimacy and physical contact through the opening provided. The sheet portions can additionally assist in regulating individual body temperatures. Further, when sleeping alone a person can have an increased sense of security.
